‘THE BROKEN HEARTS GALLERY’ IS AN UNEXPECTED QUIRKY ROMANCE
A “hidden gem” kind of romance dramedy, The Broken Hearts Gallery definitely takes its own approach to telling a romance.
The Broken Hearts Gallery (2020) Film Review
Dramatic and passionate and creative, Lucy Gulliver (Geraldine Viswanathan) has to completely evaluate everything when her latest relationship ends and she’s fired from her gallery job, too. She decides to wallow which inspires her to take to her bedroom where she doesn’t move. Her besties eventually decide they’ve had enough, and they tell her to get rid of the memorabilia she’s collected from her many broken relationships. The idea is that she return the things she’s kept from her exes… which doesn’t exactly go well.
Through searching for the “how” of getting rid of these things preventing her from living life, she meets Nick (Dacre Montgomery). Nick too is struggling to make a successful go of life. When they run into each other again, the pair team up hoping maybe they’ll both find what they need to change their future.

The Broken Hearts Gallery is very much a film that is painfully the generation after me. Don’t mistake me, I don’t mean this is all bad (because trust me, I know people despise films I appreciate and enjoy, and I also know moments in those are painful, too), but sometimes this film is just, well, a little too extra. I find it exhausting that there are certain ideas that are acceptable when it comes to being in relationships. Most will say it’s outdated, but Lucy actually asks the right question in the beginning of the movie when she wonders why a relationship cannot just be that; a relationship where two people are respectful and loyal to each other.
FILM REVIEW | ‘THIS TIME NEXT YEAR’ IS A CHARMING BRITISH ROM-COM ABOUT FATE
Regardless of the exhaustion and expectations, this film is cute. It’s not dynamite, and I don’t think it will be one I consider a “comfort” re-watch, but it is one I’d probably watch again. It’s fun to see Phillipa Soo in this after liking her in the more recent One True Loves. Ironically, I also just saw the leading lady in the Prime Video movie You’re Cordially Invited and Montgomery was also in the remake of Power Rangers. In other words, most of the cast are actors just starting their resumé so there’s very few expectations. Most of the time I think this is great fun.
If you enjoy quirky films that follow normal romance patterns, but does it on its own terms, well then, The Broken Hearts Gallery is cute.

Content: there is scene of a couple in bed and conversation about sex. Girls talk about having discussions about have exclusivity, masturbation and talking about a guy “inside.” Most of this is just in passing. One character likes the same-sex if that bothers you (they heavily make out in the first few minutes of the film), and then there is one other same-sex kiss. The film rates PG-13. Note: for some reason Hulu does put a “viewer discretion advised” (typically added to R or TV-MA ratings) in the opening; the version I saw is PG-13.
