THE MEMORABLE LOVE STORY OF MADDIE AND CAL: ‘SWEET MAGNOLIAS’ OTP FAVORITE
Of all the couples on the fan favorite Netflix show, my favorite is Cal Maddox and Maddie Townsend. If I had to guess, I’d say they aren’t the popular favorite, and while I may love a certain couple more in any one episode, these two are my most favorite. This brings us to our feature today as we spotlight the Love Story of Sweet Magnolias Maddie and Cal.

For me, these two are a wise romance. By this I don’t mean that Cal couldn’t be a good match with any other main character or that Maddie, likewise, wouldn’t find happiness with another. No, what I mean is the writers have mercifully allowed them to stay. They’d had hardships (heck, they are still having them now), but they continue to choose each other and work through these challenges. They have devotion to each other and commitment to the relationship. It’s refreshing in a practical world of leaving and in the fictional world, countless leaving because the assumption is you cannot keep an audience with a happy couple.
Cal has been good for Maddie and I think Maddie (and her kids) have shown Cal a place and love he didn’t realize was missing from his life. While I am sure these two will still be gifted romantic moments (unless there is a breakup in their future which I will be annoyed about given where they start the fourth season), I decided to feature these two now given the choice they make about their relationship in the latest season. Let’s spotlight the love story of these two.

Note; there will be spoilers below. Read at your own risk.
THE DECLARATION KISS
THE SCENE: Season One, Episode 7
I don’t think this is this couple’s first kiss, but I love the moment when Maddie impulsively kisses Cal in this seventh episode. It’s a bold moment for her as she’s been nervous about letting people know she’s interested in her son’s baseball coach, but finally she lets go, to a degree, and kisses him. The scene in season three, episode nine is also flirty and charming, too.
STARTING NEW
THE SCENE: Season Three, Episode 2
I want us to be intentional about everything.
Don’t quote me on this scene being in the third season’s second episode, but I think it is. It’s a wonderful scene that has Cal arriving at Maddie’s house after a hot and emotional fallout he has from trigged by his days as a baseball player. The impression is he arrives not knowing how Maddie will react, but also aware that she could choose to let him go. Fair since he even got into legal trouble through his bad choices. Still, Maddie extends grace. He comes sharing what’s he’s been learning and trying to teach himself. And together, they decide to start new, to be friends… to date and to be “intentional” with their relationship and one another.

THE FLIRTING
THE SCENE: Season Three, Episode 9
In a place of moving forward, and starting new and choosing to stay, Maddie and Cal are better by the time his ex calls and wants to meet up. Though the dinner is awkward and odd, and his ex tries to intimidate Maddie, she’s not having it. She knows where she and Cal stand and she’s comfortable with them as an “us,” where they are in trust, and her ability to handle his ex, which she does. But it’s the end of the dinner that’s real charming when the pair, facing one another share some flirty banter and Cal, dips her and gives her a kiss, reassuring each other, and the audience that this hasn’t weakened them one bit.
‘HAUNT ME FOREVER’
THE SCENE: Season Four, Episode 1

In the opening of season four, the pair are happy and in love, and in a good place as they have committed to marry, but aren’t in a hurry to decide on the “when.” As they decorate Maddie’s porch for Halloween, the pair engage in some silly banter and Cal asks Madie what her deepest fear is. She tells him it’s to lose someone she loves. Reassuring her, he tells her he won’t be going anywhere, but if he were to become a ghost, he’d always be there, at the corner of eye. “Haunt me forever,” she says and his assurance to her is to “count on it” before they share a sweet kiss.
THE WEDDING
THE SCENE: Season Four, Episode 1 and 2
Today, we stand here and say, “I do.” But it’s really, “I will.” I will always tell you how much I love you. I will always comfort and support you, no matter what happens. I will never interrupt margarita night. I will fill your life with as much magic and romance as you can stand every single day …for as long as we both shall live
– Cal, Sweet Magnolias
This is a big spoiler, but leaving this moment off the list is impossible. This scene is wonderful. The moment hits all the high marks, from sweet vows to a pretty setting and being a family affair. I also adore the spontaneity and surprise of the scene vs. a buildup, the former of which was in debate in pop culture articles and interviews. It’s lovely and is something Maddie and Cal need (because they planned it as a newly formed family) and it’s also good for Maddie to have done something she wanted to do without dozens of outside opinions. In a word, this scene is memorable and is the very definition of how writers should pull of a surprise.
Cal. You were the surprise that I never saw coming. I never expected to find someone that would make me feel as hopeful and giddy like a teenager. But you did and still do. Every time you open the door, every time you cook dinner… every time you hold my hand, you take my breath away… with astonishing ease. I wish I could find the words to describe how lucky I am… to say that you’re mine. You make me feel strong, confident, loved. I’m the best version of myself when I’m with you. I cannot wait to spend the rest of our lives together.
