20+ FAIRY TALE FICTION BOOKS THAT SOUND LIKE A GOOD TIME
When it comes to certain genres, sometimes the only way I indulge in them is through the story medium that is a film or TV screen. Fairy tales are one of these genres. Odd since I do love a good fairy tale now and then. But there you have the confession. This hasn’t stopped me from picking up a book in the genre through the years. This inspires our fairy tale fiction books list today as I take a look at what titles I have that fit this criteria as well as perhaps a few that I think seem interesting!

Still, I think most of these align. I don’t tend to believe that fairy tales are “misleading” because I think they have a valid place in storytelling and I think they matter. But of course, I do know that most, if not all, don’t always have roots in reality. The best kind of fairy tales gives us adventure and fun, but also that happy ending, improbable or not. Let’s look at some of the fairy tale fiction books you may want to add to your list!
FAIRY TALE FICTION BOOKS
ENCHANTED HOLLOW series, MONIQUE BRASHER
A contemporary series, this one has a Cinderella retelling among its ranks and is described as a “closed door” romance, and if the cover art is anything to go off, they seem like they’d be sweet stories. Add on Goodreads
THE CAPTAIN and MISS WINTER, SALLY BRITTON
A retelling of Snow White, this novel, which is the second in the Forever After series is billed a Regency romance. Add on Goodreads
THE SELECTION series, KIERA CASS
These books take place in a kind of apocalyptic America where bad things have happened and the world no longer operates in a happy kind of way. The heroine, all named America, ends up competing in a competition to win the prince’s heart. The book also has a love triangle, but oddly, it’s a book I do like because it’s easy reading, which I love. Add on Goodreads
KISS the GIRL, ZORAIDA CORDOVA
A Little Mermaid retelling set in modern times, I picked this one up because of its origin inspiration which I didn’t think I had seen many retellings for. Have I read it yet? Nope. Should I? Yes. Add on Goodreads

ELLA ENCHANTED, GAIL CARSON LEVINE
Considered a kind of classic, this one is a loose retelling of Cinderella (in this, the heroine is cursed so that she cannot say no aka cursed with “obedience”). Anne Hathaway stars in the adaptation and is great fun – both the film, and this novel! It’s been too long since I read this, but I have fond memories. Add on Goodreads
MELANIE DICKERSON
This author has an entire series called Hagenheim all about fairy tales. There are eleven books (I think) and they tells stories like the Mulan and Rapunzel legends. Add on Goodreads
ENTWINED, HEATHER DIXON
The “look” of this one always reminds me of Taylor Swift’s song ‘Enchanted.’ It’s a Twelve Dancing Princes story and is another I have never read. It sounds good though. Add on Goodreads
FIVE ENCHANTED ROSES and FIVE MAGIC SPINDLES and FIVE POISONED APPLES
Three separate collections of five-author stories, these collections retell the Beauty and the Beast, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty legends. The stories vary from assassinations, ghostly curiosities to wester adventure. ‘Roses’ on Goodreads • ‘Spindles’ on Goodreads • ‘Apples’ on Goodreads
BEASTLY, ALEX FLINN
This is a re-telling of Beauty and the Beast, and it was treated to an adaptation with Vanessa Hudgens playing the Belle character. The book, though I cannot remember for certain, reads very “young,” even though it’s a young adult (vs middle grade) novel. Still, the contemporary novel is sweet and I appreciate it for this. Add on Goodreads
BITTER GREENS, KATE FORSYTH
Described as a Rapunzel retelling, this one is a historical novel that is also tagged as a “dark magic” genre. Add on Goodreads

ROYAL WEDDINGS series, RACHEL HAUK
These are lovely modern contemporary novels by inspirational author Rachel Hauck. I read them all years ago and did quite enjoy them though I think this first book about a woman who falls for a prince, may be my favorite. Add on Goodreads
THE LOST PRINCESSES series, JODY HEDLUND
Jody Hedlund wrote a series of fairy tale stories which had three main books and a novella to go with it. The covers sure look swoony and fun. Add on Goodreads
FAERIE TALE COLLECTION, JENNI JAMES
This is a series, at least in part, I bought a few books from eons ago. I never read them though they are tagged with the off detested “clean romance” tag and reviews seem to support this. The indie novels have stories for nearly any and every fairy tale you could imagine. From popular Beauty and the Beast and Snow White to lesser knowns like The Frog Prince and Rumpelstiltskin. Add on Goodreads
THE CHRONICLES of NARNIA, C.S. LEWIS
I’m not sure if this series is technically a fairy tale, but it does have “fantastic forces and beings” and of course, there are kings and queens too! Unlike some of these other fairy tales, this one doesn’t always have happy endings across its seven books, but these bittersweet moments aren’t without meaning and purpose, which makes accepting them better. Add on Goodreads
OF CURSES and KISSES, SANDHYA MENON
A modern Beauty and the Beast Retelling, I read this one back in the day and based on those distant memories, I did enjoy it. It’s young adult and takes place the St. Rosetta’s Academy. Add on Goodreads
CINDER, MARISSA MEYER
A kind of cyborg story, this is one I’ve had on my shelf for a long time. Did I read it? Nope. I think finally I unhauled it, alongside the other books I had in this Lunar Chronicles series. This one follows Cinderella and I think the second is maybe a kind of Little Red Riding Hood character. Add on Goodreads

WICKED JEALOUS, ROBIN PALMER
Back in the day when I would buy anything I was currently fangirling over (on places like Amazon Marketplace), this was one of my shopping spree victims. I don’t think I have it any more, nor did I ever read it, but it’s a fairy tale. It looks cute and so we’re adding it. Add on Goodreads
THE SHADOW QUEEN, C.J. REDWINE
I had this one a long time ago, but don’t anymore! Still, I see lots of praise for C.J.’s books. Add on Goodreads
THE FROST GATE, HANNA SANDVIG
A retelling of Snow White, this one is described as “sweet and cozy” and is the third book in a trio of Faerie Tale Romances novels. Add on Goodreads
ONCE UPON a ROMCOM series, MARIE SOLEIL
I have Cinder Luna in this series (the retelling is obvious given its title) and there is also Isabelle and the Beast and then there is one called Lily of the Tower coming soon. They are contemporaries but seem as though they’d be fun! ‘Cinder Luna’ add on Goodreads • ‘Beast’ add on Goodreads
A FOREST of STOLEN MEMORIES, CALLIE THOMAS
This one is a variation of Sleeping Beauty and follows the heroine Roselyn as she struggles with a curse that erases all of her memories. Add on Goodreads

THE PRINCESS, LORI WICK
One of the books from my long ago reading days! This one is a contemporary all about marrying a prince. Though of course, there is lots more to it. Add on Goodreads
ONCE UPON A TIME IN TEXAS and TEXAS EVER AFTER series, KAREN WITEMEYER
These series, from what I can see, are kind of wester fairytales. The first (OUATIT) is traditionally published and the next is going to be independent, which begins in June with To Love a Beast. I haven’t read these, but years ago I did read some of Karen’s books so I’m including them. ‘Beast’ add on Goodreads • ‘Fairest’ add on Goodreads
There are hundreds of other titles that fit the fairy tale genre, but this is a starting point and hopefully, a place to begin if you’re looking for some fairy tales! Have you or would you read any of these? Which ones seem more interesting? Which ones seem least interesting? Comment any and all of your thoughts below! Let’s talk.
