The day set aside for dad’s is almost here, and though it’s a week earlier, we are celebrating the men in our lives with a little list that highlights heartwarming on-screen scenes with fathers and children. From favorite movies and TV shows to underrated moments, let’s make some discoveries.

ADAM with CONRAD and JEREMIAH from THE SUMMER I TURNED PRETTY
THE EPISODE: Season Two, Episode 8
Adam wins no “father of the year” awards in terms of that the show portrays him always with his boys, but that kitchen scene they share which is about the loss of their mother and the beach house that matters so much to the Fisher boys is sweet. It also feels like, though I don’t know whether writers will gift this to us, that first step anyone needs to take in order to make a relationship work. Having conversations, even if uncomfortable, needs to be part of healthy or healing relationships.

Their relationship starts, well, very weirdly. But the weird isn’t intentional because neither of them knows who the other is. Still, throughout the eight episodes of this underrated Netflix show, these two do share some genuinely touching moments even if they are too fleeting. It’s also nice to see Alistair choose to stay…

BEN and JAKE from BEFORE and AFTER
This film features lots of emotionally charged moments between Liam Neeson’s Ben and his son, Jake. Accused of murder, the story is about protection of his son and doing things that then cause danger to Ben. However, nearer the end is when the real tears flow. Though I don’t agree with Ben’s decision and how he ends up “resolving” his choices, the scene is emotional, and I do think he is always motivated by doing what’s right for Jake.

ERIC and OLIVIA from LA DOLCE VILLA
There are a couple of cute scenes between these two, but it comes after lots of fighting, too. Still, the scene on the bench is lovely and it’s a very “healing” kind of place between them. They talk about things, about what reno-ing this place meant for and to Olivia (and what she wants her dad to understand it means for him), and even more importantly, both of them listen to each other. They hear what the other is saying and recognize that they both deserve to pursue what they are good at.

FRANK and ERIN from BLUE BLOODS
There are many touching scenes between father and child in the CBS drama Blue Bloods, but this between father and daughter is recent. It occurs when Frank, as he rarely does, allows one of his co-workers get one over on him in helping someone cut some NYPD red tape. This causes a bit of complication between the commissioner’s office (Frank) and the DA (Erin). But the pair patch things up in a sweet scene when Erin drops by the house and they share conversation at the kitchen table.

JUSTIN and HIS LITTLE GIRL from JUROR #2
The scene between Nicholas Hoult and his baby girl in the end of the film is lovely. It’s all too brief and simple, but the “before” that comes prior to this scene makes it all the more impacting.

KEITH and MINNIE from THIS TIME NEXT YEAR
I didn’t expect there to be such a charming or memorable scene between father and daughter in this film, based on the novel by Sophie Cousens. The scene comes when Minnie, having given up something big in her life in order to help her friend find some peace, and hopefully her too, and her father talk about the things Minnie would do differently and taking the wisdom she learns from her failures how she’d do these things differently. Her dad lets her know that sometimes it’s okay to accept help, and that if it means helping her with the goal she has, he’ll gift her some of the vintage clocks he loves and collects as startup.
The scene is simple and in the kitchen, Minnie sits on the counter while they talk and throwing her arms around him, they both understand the importance of this moment. This is without question a favorite father and children scene, plus it is charming and also surprisingly touching.

MIKE and MANDY from LAST MAN STANDING
THE EPISODE: Season Nine, Episode 1
In the opening of the final season, Mandy has fears. It’s written into the script because of certain “rules” we in our real life lived through and because Mandy is expecting her first baby. She expresses these fears to her dad, and he reassures her, which is comforting. Yes, she’s all grown up and married and growing a family, but sometimes, no matter who were are, it’s nice to have reassurance and to know there are people in our corner who will protect us no matter what comes. And rescue doesn’t always have to look like a “one size fits all” situation. Sometimes it’s just in the reassurance from someone that they are there, and in this scene Tim Allen’s Mike is there for Molly McCook’s Mandy, the middle daughter that he may not have much in common with, but still loves and would do anything for.

OLIVER and JOE from SIGNED, SEALED, DELIVERED
THE MOVIE: ‘To the Moon and Back’
This film franchise, from Hallmark, has the recurring theme about the importance of fathers, and the complications that stems from that. There is a particularly poignant scene though in ‘To the Moon and Back’ when Oliver, after finding a box of letters from his bio dad has a good heart-to-heart with the man who is his dad. It’s on the stairs and surprises me with its emotional turnout.

ROY and ANGELA from MATCHSTICK MEN
This doesn’t end up being father and daughter, but in many ways that counts, it is. The final scene between them is really nice and we get to see that Roy will be okay, in part, because of what Angela taught him. And in turn, Angela, through Roy, learns that she can be loved and have love.

SNOW and THE KING from MIRROR MIRROR
Reuniting with her father, the scene, though brief when Snow comes face to face with her father again is touching. Needing to defeat a beast in order to survive and save her friends, there is something in the beast’s eyes that stops Snow, and turns out there’s good reason for this!

STURGESS and CHAPLIN TURNER from JAG
THE EPISODE: Season Nine, Episode
The scene in Jag is memorable. It arrives after a series of events (through various episodes) cause Sturgess to question his faith. Helping him is the arrival of his dad, a Chaplin in the military, and the man who has been a kind of “north star” for Sturgess for much of his life. The two of them have deeper conversations which unfolds through two different scenes.
