10 THINGS TO WATCH IF YOU LIKE ‘WE WERE LIARS’: WATCH THESE IF YOU LOVE THE DRAMA!
A trending show that is making a splash on Prime Video, We Were Liars is covering social media and populating in pop culture stories. All of this is for the second time because as we all know this is an adaptation of the novel by E. Lockhart, a book that earned a 2014 “Best YA” Goodreads win title. Since everyone is binging that and loving the dramatic binge release, we step again into what to watch if you like We Were Liars or things to watch if you love the show. This may be a repeat of other titles we have in other of our ‘watchalike’ series, but still, we want to have fun, so let’s do that!
LIST | 15 MORE MOVIES TO WATCH FOR SUMMER RIGHT NOW!
The show, which articles say does differ from the novel (which I never read), follows four teens who every summer (since they were eight) spend time together at the wealthy private property of the Sinclair family, which is “American royalty” as Cadence Sinclair Eastman (played by Emily Alyn Lind) tells us about her family in the opening, she also tells us about the “tallest tales” everyone tells as they reunite, how she and her cousins earn the “liars” nickname, and all about her best friend Gat. The show has a kind of magical feeling because it showcases some stunning scenes between the beautifully lit boardwalk scene or the epic first kiss, which yes, I can appreciate even not being a viewer sold on the romance.
Let’s see what other shows you can watch to help fill the void that we have after binging We Were Liars.
THINGS to WATCH if you like WE WERE LIARS
ABESENTINA
This one seems much darker than We Were Liars, and also more adult with its “mature” rating. But it is about a woman suffering from trauma and trying to remember and reclaim her life. In this story, Stana Katic (who we know from Castle) plays a woman who becomes a prime suspect in a curious case of multiple murders.

This is a film that is also a period drama, but it’s a mystery about a girl who dies and the twisty secrets the family around a dinner table holds. A family that is described as being “the wealthy Birling family.” An inspector tries to find answers and learn what happened to the girl who knows no one cares about.

THE BETTER SISTER
From Prime Video, this one follows terribly estranged sisters who end up being at the center of a sensational story that involves murder and affairs, and other emotionally complicated matters. Jessica Biel and Elizabeth Banks lead the cast in this one. It’s a kind of twisty story that feels sort of interesting, but also a little depressing, mainly because I wonder, by the end, what just happened… and does it mean there is another murderer in the family?

BLEAK HOUSE
Not sure if this one fits neatly, but I’m including it because it is about, in part, characters trying to find answers about secrets of the past. There is also an inheritance that plays a large role in this and is central to at least one part of a story that has lots of secrets, but thankfully, the BBC adaptation does gift us with sunnier moments and ultimately a happy end for the characters most deserving.

THE LAST ANNIVERSARY
I hadn’t seen this show, but it has Teresa Palmer and so I watched it having recognized her and liked her from other titles I’ve seen. The show is about a group of women, each mourning something or someone they lost, and one, Palmer’s Sophie mourning a life she hasn’t been able to find for herself. I only saw episode one, but it’s interesting though I am sure bound to get dark. Because of the many characters, it’s bound to get dark and the mystery of why two sisters found an abandoned baby years ago plays heavily into the plot. The show also presents characters and situations we can relate to. The Last Anniversary is based on the novel by Liane Moriarty and also features Miranda Richardson. Six episodes is the count of this miniseries.

NANCY DREW, tv show
I only saw one (or maybe two) episodes of this CW show, but apart from the darker hues and lack of beach-y vibes, this one fits. It’s loosely based on the Nancy Drew novels albeit modernized. So the likening comes from the fact that this one is about teenagers experiencing dark things and teenagers figuring out these dark things.

THE PERFECT COUPLE
A wealthy family gathers along with guests to celebrate the wedding of one of their sons. The show, from there, has secrets, things said and then a murder happens. I’m not sure if this, like others on this list, really fits nice with a watch this if you like We Were Liars list, but the beach and the secrets makes it seem like a nice fit. Nicole Kidman leads the cast of impressive names and faces.

PRETTY LITTLE LIARS
This seems obvious but is still one I simply must include. It’s one of those “heyday” titles when The CW (formerly known as WB) had quite the slate of titles. Lucy Hale led the cast along with a group of other names, too, which did include Then, later one, the show kind of “reinvented” itself with a fresh new cast but it didn’t have the longevity of the original, which describes itself as being

THE SUMMER I TURNED PRETTY
Set at the beach, this is inspired by a trilogy by Jenny Han. It also has lots of beach settings and scenes and drama. There isn’t mystery involved or some kind of murder, but there is sorrow and depth and the show echoes We Were Liars in its many scenes taking place under the sunshine. This story is about a love triangle and having to say goodbye to people and let go of others these five teenagers love so deeply.

VERONICA MARS
Darker, in its production “look,” this is an oldie show that perhaps generations now wouldn’t like. I don’t know. I think it’s fun and is, from what I remember, more of a case-of-the-week concept vs one linear eight-episode run (like We Were Liars), but some things still feel similar. Kristen Bell stars in this story that is definitely an iconic kind of cult classic.
