THINGS to WATCH LIKE A TASTE for MURDER
CANNES CONFIDENTIAL
This one is, sadly, a one and done procedural and is great fun. It takes place in France and is a good deal of fun to watch. The only season is six episodes and featured Jamie Bamber (who period drama aficionados will know from the 90s productions of Horatio Hornblower).
Synopsis: Gutsy Cannes detective Camille Delmasse coerces suave con man Harry King to help clear her father, a former cop, of corruption. Can the sparring duo work together to uncover a conspiracy? Starring Lucie Lucas, Jamie Bamber, and Tamara Marthe. – via Prime Video

CURIOUS CATERER, film series
This one teams a caterer named Goldy as a would-be sleuth who teams with a new in town detective who teams with him when her friend dies under mysterious circumstances. The films feature Hallmark favorite Nikki DeLoach and fan favorite leading man Andrew Walker. This franchise only has five movies with the last one airing nearly two years ago in the fall of 2024.
Synopsis: Colorado caterer Goldy Berry teams with detective Tom Schultz to identify the ingredients that led to the mysterious death of her friend — and ends up discovering a hidden recipe for murder. – via Hallmark Channel

THE GOOD SHIP MURDER

GOURMET DETECTIVE, film series
These movies are a good deal of fun and had the flavor of Castle-esque storytelling. Dylan O’Neal and Brooke Burns starred in these films that spanned five different titles.
Synopsis: Famed culinary consultant Henry Ross is a charming food industry insider in San Francisco. When suspicious sabotage ends in a shocking murder at his friend’s five-star restaurant, Henry is put on the case with strong-willed police detective and single mom, Maggie Price. – via Hallmark Channel

THE MADAME BLANC MYSTERIES
I binged this one a while back and did actually enjoy it. It was entertaining and good fun. It follows an antiques expert who, after travelling to France in the aftermath of her husband’s sudden death discovers secrets about him she isn’t prepared to face which leads her to begin solving crimes in this place where she decides to stay. Joining her is a group of friendly locals and a helpful cab driver who becomes her partner.
Synopsis: Antiques dealer Jean White (Sally Lindsay, Mount Pleasant) is nearly bankrupt after her husband’s sudden death, and so she heads to their one last asset: a cottage in antiques hub Sainte Victoire, France. – via Prime Video

THE MALLORCA FILES
This one is lots of fun and something I thoroughly enjoyed. It’s about a mismatched (or are they?) detective duo who bicker but also make a great investigative team. The scenery, like so many of these, is gorgeous.
Synopsis: Ambitious young British detective Miranda Blake and her laid-back German partner Max Winter look like the perfect team – if only they could see it. But as this mismatched partnership starts to solve some of Mallorca’s most mysterious cases, the chemistry starts to build. – via Prime Video

MY LIFE is MURDER
One of the most entertaining TV series in recent history, Lucy Lawless leads this playing a woman who puts her former career as a policewoman to work as a consultant for the police. Along the way, she teams up with the sassy and talented computer expert, and her brother, played by Martin Henderson, also pops in now and then.
Synopsis: Former detective Alexa Crowe is lured into the world of murder and mystery when her friend and colleague asks her to look into the death of a woman who fell from the balcony of a male escort. – via Prime Video

THE HUNDRED-FOOT JOURNEY, film
This isn’t a mystery, but it is a story that has lots of food. It moves a bit slow but has a great story that follows an untested but very talented cook who ends up finding fame and fortune as a chef. Helen Mirren co-stars with Manish Dayal.
Synopsis: A gifted self-taught Indian cook opens a diner in a French village, sparking rivalry with a nearby restaurant owner-until his dishes awaken unexpected emotions. – via Prime Video

RECIPES for LOVE and MURDER

R.J. DECKER
Synopsis: Written by Rob Doherty (“Elementary”) and starring Scott Speedman, R.J. Decker is a former newspaper photographer and ex-con who starts over as a private investigator in the colorful-if-crime-filled world of South Florida. – via ABC

SIGNORA VOLPE
Emilia Fox leads this show about a former spy who, while visiting her sister, becomes entangled in a mystery or two. This one is different because it’s not about cops, but the setting feels similar and that’s what earns it its place here.
Synopsis: Disillusioned British spy Sylvia Fox (Emilia Fox) is in Italy for her niece’s wedding when the groom goes missing. Sylvia solves the mystery and, longing to reconnect with her sister (Tara Fitzgerald), decides to start anew in Umbria. Soon she’s tackling other cases and winning over a handsome local cop (Giovanni Cirfiera), even as her ex-husband/ex-colleague (Jamie Bamber) tries to lure her back. – via Prime Video

WHITSTABLE PEARL
Full of emotion and surprising depth, Whitstable Pearl is a really good crime drama. It has great performances and interesting mysteries.
