THINGS TO WATCH IF YOU LIKE ‘REMINDERS OF HIM’
Love her books or not, there is no denying that Colleen Hoover has multiple international bestsellers to her name. That success has resulted in four (and likely more to someday come) film adaptations. One of these is Reminders of Him, the latest title to feature in our things to watch like list. Moody and dramatic is going to be the goal, so keeping this in mind, I’m quite curious to see what not-so-obvious (because there will be obvious inclusions, too!) titles there is to discover.

THINGS TO WATCH IF YOU LIKE ‘REMINDERS OF HIM.’ A list of titles that you can watch if you love #ColleenHoover’s #RemindersofHim. Share on XIf you have heard of Reminders of Him, but don’t know what it’s about, here’s a quite recap. The story follows Kenna, a woman just out of prison who returns home hoping to start doing something right six years after the worst night of her life. There are lots of threads that go into this and new friendships, too, but this is the basic concept of the story. If emotional turmoil doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, then the titles that feel similar to Reminders of Him may not be your cup of tea. But if you do like Hoover’s stories, or other stories that have plenty of emotional upheaval, well then, you may enjoy these, too!

A MEMORY in my HEART
Is adding this one an unusual add? Maybe. It’s from 1999 and has Jane Seymour playing a woman who begins to have memories that lead her to learn what secrets her past may be hiding. These are memories from close to ten years ago from a past she cannot remember. It’s one of those TV films that has emotion, but also mystery and a crazy answer as to “why” she has this past-life memory.
Product Description (in part): Rebecca Vega (Jane Seymour) doesn’t remember anything of her life prior to waking up in a hospital eight years ago. Now that she and her husband Joe (A Martinez) have begun trying to have a child, she has been plagued with headaches and recurring nightmares. – via Amazon

AN UNFINISHED LIFE
This one features Jennifer Lopez in the lead role and follows a woman who returns to the home of her estranged father (who also blames her for the past) where she seeks safety for her daughter. The cast aside from Lopez is quite impressive and includes Morgan Freeman, Robert Redford and Josh Lucas. watch like reminders of him

Then, suddenly, the woman he blames for the death of his only son arrives at his door broke, desperate, and with a granddaughter he’s never known. FOREVER MY GIRL
This one is about a rising musician who leaves his bride at the altar and, close to ten years later, he returns to a funeral where he also finds her. This isn’t a film I see talked about much, but I think it’s bittersweet and mostly charming. It’s kind of put in a box of being “silly” or not a good movie, but it does have some emotional heft to it and the performances are decently impressive.

Synopsis: A country music super-star returns to his hometown after leaving his love behind 8 years ago. – via Prime Video

IT ENDS with US
This is the controversial Colleen Hoover adaptation that had a court case attached to it. I didn’t see this one and don’t plan to because it’s really not a “me” story. But I am sure many loved it. The plot is about a woman in an abusive relationship and the times she stays before finally she ends their relationship and looks for a brighter future.
Synopsis: Lily Bloom moves to Boston to chase her dream of opening her own business. A chance meeting with charming neurosurgeon soon sparks an intense connection, but as the two fall deeply in love, she begins to see sides of Ryle that remind her of her parents’ relationship. When Lily’s first love reenters her life, her relationship with Ryle gets upended. – via Prime Video

LOVE AGAIN
No one (in a large scale) seems to like this movie. But I thought it was sweet. I think the book does the concept better in regards to the text message element, but the film gives the couple more face-to-face which I like. So, both have their good points. The plot is about a woman who starts to text the number her fiancé had before he died.

Synopsis: Coping with the loss of her fiancé, Mira Ray sends a series of romantic texts to his old cellphone number, not realizing it was reassigned to journalist Rob Burns. Rob becomes captivated by the honesty of her words in the beautifully constructed texts. When he’s assigned to write a profile of superstar Celine Dion, he enlists her help to figure out how to meet Mira in person — and win her heart.– via Prime Video

NICHOLAS SPARKS movies
I don’t think a watchalike list centering on Colleen Hoover novels is complete without mentioning the Nicholas Sparks novels. And while I know his novels do get criticism, let’s be honest, Hoover’s novels have issues same as Sparks’ do. I have seen several of his adaptations, loved some and detested others.
If I had to pick a favorite, it would probably be The Choice which tells the story of a man who waits for the wife he loves during a terrible health situation that challenges him; or Safe Haven, which is a story about a woman running from her past (and of course finding a brighter, happier present). I actually haven’t seen his most-loved adaptation, detest Message in a Bottle and have read some of his books.

Safe Haven is a nice fit in a list of titles to watch like Reminders of him because of the themes.
Other adaptations by him are:
- The Best of Me
- The Longest Ride
- The Lucky One
- Nights in Rodanthe
- The Notebook
- A Walk to Remember

ONE TRUE LOVES
This is based on the novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid and surprisingly, I really did like it. It’s about a woman who loses the love of her life, grieves, cannot move on and finally begins to heal. Then her past in the most unexpected way returns and changes everything.
Synopsis: Newly engaged to be married, Emma’s world is turned upside down when the husband she presumed dead comes back into her life. – via Prime Video

RAISING HELEN
This one is, generally, more “lighthearted” but is still very emotional. It follows Kate Hudson’s heroine who loses her sister and ends up taking on and raising her sister’s kids. The film has tears and isn’t afraid of them, but like I said, overall, I think it’s more upbeat just because it doesn’t tangle up with the complication of the emotional weight of guilt. Still, I enjoy Hudson in this role (for the time, I think it was a deeper character for her) and you see Hayden Panettiere, John Corbett (pictured below with Kate Hudson in a scene from the film) and Joan Cusak.

Synopsis: Helen must choose between a life she loves or a new life. – via Prime Video

REGRETTING YOU
Also inspired by a Colleen Hoover novel, this title is an ideal rec on this things like Reminders of Him to watch. The story follows a woman whose husband dies and she also loses her sister, too. There are secrets (of course) as she tries to rebuild with her daughter, her sister’s boyfriend and their young son.
Synopsis: When Clara’s world turns upside down, the last thing she expects is love but then Miller changes everything. His quiet strength helps her find joy again in a tender tale of first love, second chances, and a connection that makes everything brighter. – via Prime Video

TAKE ME HOME
I really don’t know why this one seems fitting for the list, but I’ve included it. It moves slow (which it shares in common with Reminders of Him) and is about a woman with a complicated relationship with her past. She hires a taxi to drive her home in the aftermath of her father’s health condition.
Synopsis: Little does NYC cab driver Thom Colvin know that when an attractive lady hops into his cab and says “take me to California,” their journey winding across America will become the adventure, and mis-adventure, of their lifetimes. – via Prime Video

VOICEMAILS for ISABELLE
Zoey Deutch stars at a woman who loses her sister and feeling listless in the aftermath, she starts to leave her sister voicemails as part of the grieving process, little realizing that her messages are being listened to. The movie is emotional and has a lot of tears, but there is also joy and loveliness in the movie, too.

Logline: Jill copes with her sister’s death by leaving her voicemails chronicling her chaotic life in San Francisco. When the number is unknowingly reassigned, an elusive Austin real estate agent begins receiving the hilariously confessional messages. – via Netflix
Stream, at publication, with Hulu; or to digitally purchase on places like Prime Video
BONUS! IT’S NOT LIKE THAT, tv show
This is a TV show that follows a man who loses his wife and tires to copen not only with his grief but also the grief of his children. Also, part of the equation is his wife’s friend and her children who learn in small ways how to be there and help their friends work through this sorrow.
Synopsis: After his wife Jenny dies, Pastor Malcolm Jeffries struggles to raise their three children and find his way forward. Lori Soto, Jenny’s best friend and newly divorced mother of two, leans on Malcolm, as their families have been close for years. Faith and friendship steady them through grief and growing pains, but when comfort ignites into something more, they insist it’s not like that. Or is it? – via Prime Video
