IF YOU LIKE ‘BRIDGERTON,’ TRY THESE TWENTY NOVELS

Today we talk about a subject that we don’t cover or discuss on this space. Apart from seeing it splashed across social media everywhere, and seeing the colorful images and promotional images, I have no addiction to Bridgerton. May we humbly suggest that if you like Bridgerton try these novels. Of course when we mention this drama, we’re talking about the big, splashy romance series from Netflix, based on the novels of the same name.

I have zero doubt that there’s lists aplenty recommending readalike titles for Bridgerton. However, I hope ours is slightly different in that we’re not into the usual “bodice ripper” titles set in the regency (plus other settings, too) era. As a result, these novels won’t be the same as Bridgerton because I like my historical stories, whether that’s in cinema form or novel, to be different than the modern romances I watch. As a result, the options we share will likely be more wholesome and sweet than spicy and sexy. (Still, do your research on whether or not these will be good reads for you. Many are secular fiction and as a result, probably contain some adult material.)

Even without as much (or any) spice, this in no way means these stories aren’t equally good. Let’s dive in and see what stories we’ll discover.

IF YOU LIKE BRIDGERTON TRY THESE NOVELS

THE LADIES REWRITE THE RULES, SUZANNE ALLAIN

I do own this one, but, like usual, I haven’t read it. It seems like it’d be a fun read though and something entertaining if you like the era or historical novels. Goodreads

ANYTHING JANE AUSTEN

Of course, Austen is a great fit if you like Bridgerton. Not if you like the bodice ripping aspects of the Netflix series, but if you enjoy the period, well, Austen’s novels would seem to be a good read. Goodreads

GRESHAM CHRONICLES (SERIES), LAWANA BLACKWELL

Read these years ago, and though vague, my memory is that I enjoyed them. Goodreads

MR. GARDINER and the GOVERNESS, SALLY BRITTON

One of the titles that impresses Amazon readers (it has an average of four and a half stars with over 3,000 reviews), this one follows a governess who falls for a houseguest of her employer. Goodreads

THE BEST INTENTIONS, SARAH M. EDEN

Another author I see featured a lot, but one I haven’t read, this one has 500+ reviews and a high average. Goodreads

SOMETHING IN THE HEIR, SUZANNE ENOCH

I’ve read a little bit of this novel and so far, it’s cute. It’s about a woman, just out for her “season” who concocts the perfect marriage of convenience in order to save her family home (thanks to an unusual clause!) and her willing husband, who is looking for political influence. Goodreads

AN IMPROBABLE SEASON, ROSALYN EVES

Haven’t read this young adult novel, but it sounds like it could be a fun read. Plus, the cover concept is cute. Goodreads

WIVES and DAUGHTERS, ELIZABETH GASKELL

I’ve never read this novel, so this may be one that doesn’t fit at all. I’m just remembering the miniseries from BBC, and it was lovely, so I have to assume the novel tells a good story, too. Though I think Gaskell probably wrote more seriously than Bridgerton author Julia Quinn. Goodreads

WITTY IN PINK, ERIKA GEORGE (AUGUST)

Our next option in this list of if you like Bridgerton try these novels list is one I don’t know anything about, but the cover art sure looks fun, so I’m adding it with hopeful optimism that it’d be a good read. Goodreads

QUEEN BEE, AMALIE HOWARD

Love the colors and the hint of sass on this cover which tells the story of a girl wanting to get revenge on her ex best friend. Goodreads

A LADY’S GUIDE TO FORTUNE-HUNTING, SOPHIE IRWIN

This is another title I’ve read a few chapters in. It’s fun and sets up to follow a woman without parents but sisters to think about who is looking to find a wealthy husband to provide them all stability. Goodreads

JULIE KLASSEN (NOVELS)

I read one or two of Julie’s novels back in the day and never really fell head over heels for them, but they were still sweet and charming historical novels that many love. One that I read was called The Dancing Master. Goodreads

SOMERSET STOREIS (SERIES), MIMI MATTHEWS

Mimi is another author so many people love. I haven’t read anything by her but do think that her Sommerset set of novels seems like it may be an interesting read. She also has the Belles of London series. Goodreads

AN AFFECTIONATE ADVERSARY, CATHERINE PALMER

Long before Bridgerton was a Netflix series, Catherine Palmer wrote this Miss Pickworth trio. Published by Tyndale, the novels recently had a revamp with beautiful new covers, and they made me wonder, what if I reread them? The novel revolves around two people who together survive a brutal affair only to become the talk of society. Goodreads

BRIDES OF MONTCLAIR, JANE PEART

This series has many novels and would be a fun thing to see adapted. It spans generations and years which means some novels are set during the wars and others have more of a regency flair. Goodreads

BRIDAL VIEL (SERIES) and THE BROADMOOR LEGACY, TRACIE PETERSON

I think I’ve read one (or two) of the books in the Broadmoor series and liked it. Though asking me to remember details, well, we all know that’s impossible. Goodreads

AN IMPROPER AGREEMENT, AUDRA WELLS

I haven’t read anything by Audra, but Amazon shows off some impressive ratings and the novel sounds cute about two people who vex each other. Goodreads

THE ENGLISH GARDEN (SERIES), LORI WICK

It’s been years since I read these, but at the time, I did adore them. There’s four in the series, and while characters do crossover, each novel is about a new connection and romance. Goodreads

KENSINGTON CHRONICLES (SERIES), LORI WICK

Lori also wrote this series and while the fourth novel visits a different time period, I think the first three feature more in line with Austen-esque eras. Goodreads

  1. I actually haven’t seen Bridgerton yet, and I’m thinking about whether or not I should read or watch it first! But gah, I’m so behind on the hype for this. :) I’ve been seeing clips of the new season around and it looks sooo cute.

Also IN LOVE with some of these covers (The Ladies Rewrite the Rules in particular has my eye–so I’ll be waiting for your thoughts on it when you do end up reading it). <33

    1. I hope you enjoy Bridgerton if you see (or read!) it, Aimee. I’ve heard that the seasons (I think S3 especially) changes things from the novels. I need to read The Ladies Rewrite History. I read a review from someone I trust, and it sounds like a fun read, so I’m hoping it’d be something I’ll enjoy. :) Let me know if you read any of these and what you think!
