When it comes to creating fun seasonal lists, I’m “all in.” It’s something that I’ve created many over the years, but not with any kind of consistency. With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, now seems the perfect time to discuss some of the romance movies that might be ideal for a little valentine’s night in (or really romance movies for any day), hence the romance movies for Valentine’s Day list sees its inception.
LIST | Hallmark’s ‘Love Ever After’ Happy Endings! February 2020 Line-Up
Like any curated list, this one is not in the least bit all inclusive. There are a million and one rom-coms that can find space on lists such as this. But I wanted this to be a little smaller and more about some of the titles I don’t talk about as much…? Or perhaps I do and I’m blind to the fact simply because I kind of love them.
I’m excluding any Hallmark films on this list because I tend to talk about them in their own right. Below are mainly box office originals with some streaming originals, and of course, the odd unknown title. Let’s begin.
10+ of the Cute Romance Movies Perfect for Valentine’s Day
1: An Ideal Husband
I mean, one needs to start with a period drama am I right? This is still to this day one of my most favorite period dramas, and may very well be one of the first “adult” movies I say, plus it doesn’t hurt that it also seems more like a comedy than a heavily influenced by tough subjects period piece.
Content: There’s some adult content/situations (sexual) and thematic elements (blackmail, etc.). The film is PG-13.
2: Austenland
The memory I have associated with this film is that we got lost trying to find the theater…! To be fair, it was a theater we never go to since we had to travel into the city to see this limited release title. Still, it was an Austen inspired story, so I had to see it. Oh! And it was totally worth the annoyance of getting lost. Also, there’s JJ Field being swoon-worthy, so…
Content: this does contain adult language, situations, innuendo, and is PG-13.
3: Clueless and/or Emma (1996)
Whatever route you go, these are both fun options! Clueless is the typical 90s era contemporary teen romance that re-tells the Jane Austen story whereas the Miramax version of Emma is a period drama, but also “feels” very romantic-comedy-esque. Which is your favorite?
Content: Clueless contains some adult content/innuendo and rates PG-13 | Emma is PG
4: The Kissing Booth
Unlike its Netflix peers, this one is all about that drama which makes some of the story aspects feel inauthentic as a result; still as a silly afternoon “pick me up,” it’s a cute little romantic-comedy that has a sequel in the works. This one follows a girl who finds herself falling for her childhood best friends older and much wilder brother. Find on Netflix
Content: this does contain adult language, situations, innuendo, and is TV-14.
5: Lost for Words
If you’re more into ambiguous and dramatic romances, this one might be for you. It’s not “cute,” but I did want a bit of variety on this list, and did think this one is pretty good. It’s about a former marine who falls in love with a ballerina, but suffers unexpected complications for this. romance movies for any day
Content: rated PG13 for some suggestive material and adult situations.
6: Marry Me
A Lifetime TV production, this 3-hour two-part romantic-comedy is about a career woman who suddenly finds herself the object of affection of three very different eligible men.
Content: this does contain adult language, situations, innuendo, and is TV-14.
7: Music and Lyrics
This movie is one of my favorites, but is, sadly, one I rarely indulge in re-watching. Perhaps it’s because I’m not the biggest Hugh Grant fan, but whatever the reason, one thing cannot be argued, the story is cute.
Content: this does contain adult language, situations, innuendo, and is PG-13
8: The Perfect Date
Another Netflix original, this one is full of sass and is just plain old fun! It follows a boy who creates an app where people can hire him for a one-time date. Need to make a bad impression on parents? He’ll be that guy. Need a date to a dance? Sure, he can spin you on the dance floor. Whatever you need, he’s there… that is until, he may actually end up falling for the one girl who’s most unimpressed by him. Find on Netflix.
Content: rated PG13 for some suggestive material, though there’s nothing overly explicit.
9: The Prince and Me
Classic, what more can be said? This was probably one of the first romantic-comedies I saw in theaters, and aw, it’s a nostalgic keeper.
Content: this does contain some adult language/situations, innuendo, and is PG.
10: The Princess Diaries
If you’re looking for something fun to enjoy with a sister or your daughter, there’s not much better than this (yes I’m using the word again) nostalgic classic. It’s adorable, and while there is some romance, in classic Disney form, it’s also about a girl coming into her own and finding a way to do things in a way that honors tradition but keeps true to herself.
Content: this does have some minor innuendo, and is G.
11: The Proposal
My mom and I saw this one in theaters, and it made us laugh ourselves silly. But then, of course, Sandra Bullock is a comedic actress of the best order; it follows her character Margaret, as she bullies her overworked assistant into marrying her when she learns her Canadian visa is about to expire. romance movies for any day
Content: this does contain adult language, situations, innuendo, and is PG-13.
12: Return to Me
Not unlike Lost for Words, this one has more of an impact than some of the “silly,” lighthearted romantic-comedies we adore. That said, it’s still a good one about a woman who, after receiving a transplant finds love with the most unexpected person.
Content: rated PG13 for some suggestive material, though there’s nothing overly explicit.
13: Safe Haven
Really any Nicholas Sparks adaptation is interchangeable on this list. I added this one because it’s a more complex in its emotions, and digs a bit deeper into the characterizations, but it’s also really beautiful.
Content: rated PG13 for adult material, including sexual content, domestic abuse and some profanity.
14: Set It Up
A Netflix original, this one is too cute for words. I remember loving it back when it made its debut, which makes me wonder, why haven’t I re-watched it?? Find on Netflix
Content: this does contain adult language, situations, innuendo, and is TV-14.
15: Shirin in Love
An unknown film that’s currently on Amazon, this one follows a man who discovers his mother has taken in a woman he met at a party; a woman who is hiding from a future she may not be ready for.
Content: There is adult content in this film; including some language and sexual material. The film is rated PG13.
16 & 17: To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before (and P.S. I Still Like You)
I adore To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, based on the novel by Jenny Han, about a teen girl whose secret love letters (to her crushes) are mailed to their subjects. Needless to say, this causes awkward moments for Lara Jean, but ultimately leads to her the boy who could be her match. The sequel, P.S, I Still Like You, is due on Netflix February 12, and I AM HERE FOR IT! Plus a “romance movies” search on Google (which I did indulge in after crafting this list, in part, based on my opinion) brings up TATBILB and Set it Up. Find on Netflix
Content: this does contain some innuendo, and is TV-14.

Return to Me is a personal favorite! Also, I adore Mabel and Lord Goring’s interaction in An Ideal Husband. The newest version of Emma is my favorite, but then, I’ve always loved Romola Garai. Lost for Word has been on my Amazon watch list for the longest time, but you’ve inspired me to watch it finally.
