10+ UNDERRATED MOVIES YOU MAY FIND WORTH SEEING

February 27, 2022 3 Comments

When it comes to the movies, I’m one who enjoys select, what we coin “blockbuster” movies, but sometimes a quieter film is in the deck. With that in mind, I did want to take a closer look at if there’s some more underrated movies worth seeing. While lists like this are of course subjective, I still try hard to put out some variety so there’s a little something for any type of moviegoer.

Below we have rom-coms (because you guys know I love them); British period drama; a thriller; and a Biblical re-telling that, I think, is actually pretty good. Like we say, there’s a little something for everyone. At least, this is always the primary goal. Let’s take a look, and tell me which ones YOU are or would be most curious to see!

1: THE BACHELOR

Before becoming the mysterious G on CBS’ NCIS: Los Angeles, Chris O’Donnell had a leading man role in a rom-com. The Bachelor is an on-the-eve of 2000 release that features Chris as a man who is about to inherit a fortune only to find a catch in the fortune – he must marry in order to receive everything! Find The Bachelor (1999) digitally on Amazon Video

2: BEAUTIFUL

Honestly, back years ago when I saw this, I thought I didn’t like it. However I just re-watched it, and it’s actually quite good. Minnie Driver plays a self absorbed pageant contestant who keeps secrets and ignores the most important thing in her film. Find Beautiful digitally on Amazon Video; or at publication, it’s with Prime

3: CARRIE PILBY

Pretty sure I’ve only seen this one once. Cannot remember all the details, but do recall liking it at first blush. Plus I just really loved seeing the eldest Pevensie child (from Chronicles of Narnia) in a grown up role. Find Carrie Pilby digitally on Amazon Video

4: FOOLS RUSH IN
‘FOOLS RUSH IN’: A FUN PIECE OF 90s MOVIE NOSTALGIA. Review of the 1997 comedy with Matthew Perry and Salma Hayek. All text is © Rissi JC

A 90s romantic comedy that I rarely, if ever, see mentioned. It won’t be a “fit” for everyone because of the pregnancy trope, but I think it’s quite cute. No one makes rom-coms that “sparkle” like they did in this era. I miss it. Find Fools Rush In digitally on Amazon Video

5: GIFTED

Captain America himself stars in this film about a single man trying to raise his whip-smart niece in a way his sister would want – with normalcy. A fight ensues over her custody in an emotional, but really good film. Find Gifted digitally on Amazon Video

6: LADIES IN BLACK

An Australian period drama, this film is lovely. Perhaps a little slow-moving, but still wonderful and entertaining to see. Find Ladies in Black digitally on Amazon Video

7: LIFE OR SOMETHING LIKE IT

Angelina Jolie stars in this dramedy. I’m not the biggest fan of the megastar, but do think the messages of this film are solid. Plus, when I hear about Jolie’s roles, this one doesn’t seem to come up so it’s more underrated. Find Life or Something Like It digitally on Amazon Video

8: LOVE SARAH

Bittersweet, the film opens with a loss, only to then tell a story of healing and honoring a loved one. Find Love Sarah digitally on Amazon Video

9: THE MAKING OF A LADY
the making of a lady

A British mystery, this adaptation builds to a kind of crescendo that allows its settings to help in crafting the mystery. Based on a story by Frances Hodgson Burnet, this one really did impress me first time I saw it, and I’m wanting to re-watch it just thinking about it. Find The Making of a Lady digitally on Amazon Video

10: NOT SINCE YOU
‘NOT SINCE YOU’: IT'S A REUNION ENSEMBLE ROMANCE DONE RIGHT. A group of college friends reunite at a wedding. All text © Rissi JC

A romantic drama, this is something I finally watched on a whim after seeing it for months in my searches. Pleasantly, I’m surprised by how good this is. What I like best is that it goes a direction I didn’t expect, and takes the “harder” path which I appreciate. Find Not Since You digitally on Amazon Video

11: PATRICK

Another one that takes me by surprise, I expected to see a talking dog, but thankfully this one doesn’t go that route! Instead it’s a darling little comedy that tells a charming story. Find Patrick digitally on Amazon Video

12: RIP TIDE
Go on a Journey in ‘Rip Tide,’ a Good Movie. A review of the Australian Indie film with Debby Ryan, Rip Tide (2017). All review text © Rissi JC

Fun story about a girl who is a model, but has dreams for a different lifestyle. Find Rip Tide digitally on Amazon Video

13: THE SECRET: DARE TO DREAM
‘The Secret: Dare to Dream’: An Inspired and Beautiful Film. A review of the film with Katie Holmes and Josh Lucas. All review text © Rissi JC

Based on the popular non-fiction film, this one is pretty good. There’s lots of interesting things that script says, and the characters are really likable… plus I like that it ends a bit more open ended. Seems more honest for this story. Find The Secret: Dare to Dream digitally on Amazon Video

14: SHUT IN

The first original from Daily Wire Entertainment, this thriller is one of the best films I’ve seen to bring in Christian themes. I don’t think the company tags it as “Christian,” but there is symbolism and it does the best job I’ve seen in a while. Plus, the film has the ability to terrify not just its heroine, but us since we’re trapped alongside her. Definitely lots of, like I said, symbolism. Find Shut In exclusively on Daily Wire

15: STONEHAERST ASYLUM

A little more Gothic than most of these, this one is interesting. Not one I’m likely to watch again and again, but interesting just the same. Plus it features Kate Beckinsale who is no stranger to period drama. Find Stonehearst Asylum digitally on Amazon Video, at publication it’s streaming with IMDB TV

16: TRUST FUND
SEE EMMA’S LOUISE IN ‘TRUST FUND’: A GOOD BIBLICAL RE-TELLING

Though there’s production flaws, Trust Fund really is quite sweet. It’s a Biblical re-telling of the Prodigal Son, only this time, the siblings are girls. Find Trust Fund digitally on Amazon Video

17: WHAT IF
‘What If’ Questions if True Love Can Exist between Best Friends. A review of the 2014 romance drama with Daniel Radcliffe. Text © Rissi JC

Not really sure this one is underrated since I think there are many who have seen it. That said, I don’t really see this one talked of, so I’m adding this Daniel Radcliffe dramedy. Its way cuter than I expected, and I love when a movie surprises. Find What If digitally on Amazon Video
