POP CULTURE NEWS EDITION 19: HERE WE GO AGAIN!

Hey, hey! How’s everyone doing on this fine Friday? We’re back at it with ‘pop culture news edition nineteen’ because we all love a good roundup of stories, right? (Am I the only one?) It’s time to take a peek at some (because I never share them all) of the pop culture-y stories that made headlines.

Some of these are the typical TV shows stories (because they always get headlines!) and others are maybe a little more interesting. Whatever the case, it’s time, we’re here and let’s go!

POP CULTURE NEWS EDITION NINETEEN

1: AMAZON UPS THE ANTE

In an “earnings report” call, Amazon execs say they have tripled their number of original films and TV shows since 2018. I don’t know if I could recognize this or not, but I’m curious. Do you think their upping the number of original programming shows off good quality or do you rarely find anything that is that good?

It’s also spent $13 billion (!!) according to the story as well. Plus, there’s to be a Prime price hike.

2: CBS REVIVALS AND FAVORITE CHARACTERS

After news that the Paramount+ reboot of Criminal Minds was coming, and then was dead, there’s now news that a revival is, in fact, in the works. Rumor has it, former cast members Joe Mantegna, Kirsten Vangsness, Adam Rodriguez, A.J. Cook, Aisha Tyler and Paget Brewster are all in talks to return depending on “closing their deals and availability” according to the article.

Also, speaking of CBS re-boots, original CSI cast member Marg Helgenberger is in talks to return for season two of the revival CSI: Vegas. This comes in the wake of Jorja Fox and William Peterson separately announcing they would not return for season two, Jorja Fox in the aftermath of Peterson’s announcement, stating she simply cannot break up her character, Sara with Peterson’s again.

3: NOSTALGIC ANNIVERSARY INSPIRES DREAM RE-CAST?

I missed mentioning this in one of our other pop culture editions, but did you know, this year marks 20 years for A Walk to Remember. This isn’t a film I ever saw because I cannot when something certain happens to a lead character. I like happy in romance or if it’s more drama, I’ll take Return to Me any day. But there’s lots of love for this one!

To celebrate its 20th year, star Mandy Moore did a bunch of press, and in one interview, she shared that she’d like Olivia Rodrigo cast as her character Jamie in any type of re-make of the film. Um, I don’t think that casting fits based on everything I know of this film and Rodrigo. It’s just wrong.

4: SHIFT IN REAL ENPOWERMENT…?

One of the things and news stories that have been coming out through the weeks is the women, actresses and Instagram personalities, coming out and saying nudity or dressing half nude isn’t empowering. Most recently Euphoria actress Sydney Sweeney said her nude scenes, while more comfortable than other film sets she’s been one, aren’t empowering. Similarly, some Instagram personalities are shifting to say they feel most empowered when modestly clothed. I think most people hear “modest” and assume it’s a flour sack. That is the farthest thing from the truth. I also subscribe to the belief that if “sexy” fashion is your vibe, you can do so without being in lingerie on a red carpet.

I also think, this mentality is healthy and far more honest than the narrative claim that public (film, social media) nudity is empowering.

NEW TV:
  • Reacher, Amazon’s new series dropped today which is based on the Lee Childs novels and will be a 2022 version of the Jack Reacher character made famous (in cinema) by Tom Cruise.
  • Netflix finally drops Sweet Magnolia’s season two today! I’m SUPER excited and now want to know, what are you excited about?
  • As a follow up of a prior pop culture news story we had, a spin off for Walker also gets an official CW pilot order. Could be interesting, right?

Ok, your turn! What stories did you see that interested you? Do you agree or disagree with any of these? What thoughts did you have about the pop culture news stories you saw? Did you see Reacher? What did you think? Comment all the comments below – let’s chat!

Thank you for visiting! Please, do come back soon.

    1. Right!? I haven’t seen it, but it’s a movie that girls my age would have been flocking to theaters to see and same: I feel SO old. Nothing like a good pop culture anniversary to do that. ;)
