FALL 2022 FASHION TRENDS: WHAT’S IN THIS SEASON?

With a new season, one of the things we look at with the change in air is the shifting fashion. This is later than I intended, but our topic today is the fall 2022 fashion trends and looks. I don’t get into many of the trends, but I do like some of them and enjoy looking to see what’s in and what’s not. Since this also isn’t a universal shared favorite of those who may stop in or read this, I probably won’t put another such post together until the spring. After all most fall fashion ideas can apply to winter, too.

We have some color and just in general things that are in style so to speak. One thing I did read about is a color I wouldn’t expect to be trending and I’m still seeing overalls (short and long) being a kind of trend. What I really need to know is, are we here for this or no? Let’s just jump into this haphazard and brief fall fashion report and see what we can find.

FALL 2022 FASHION

90S WINS

Really, most fashion currently can be overall summed up with 90s vibes. There’s SO much that is being repurposed, maybe with new lines or slightly different angle, that is 90s revived. From the overalls(1) and crop tops to the fanny pack (which has been IN for a long time now), it’s a thing.

Just not one I’m sure I’m here for.

According to a publication like Woman and Home, the 90s trend is more niche in that it’s “90s minimalism.” Their definition of this is strappy dresses, camisoles and slogan tees. This 90s Barbie tee could be fun, especially if you size up to get that popular oversized fit. There’s also lots of other oversized tee looks like a navy USA oversized fit or this boxy crop tee(2). Other options include a National Park tee(3) or a ‘Cowboy Take Me Away’ black vintage wash(4). If you aren’t into tees, there are some cute, oversized pullovers too! This pink one and rock and roll style(5) are both from a cute boutique shop. Going with that 90s vibing, there’s lots of sneakers on places like Amazon including this Puma casual sneaker in pink (with lots of positive reviews!) or these “play” sneakers in a myriad of different patterns and colors!

DENIM

When it comes to denim, it’s shifting from the popular skinny jean we’ve all worn the last several years. WhoWhatWear says the flare jean’s moment is over and in its place steps the “ultra relaxed” jean. So not just slightly, but ULTRA.

I doubt these would be ultra, but Amazon sells a pair by Lee that is dubbed as relaxed, but still has a tapered leg(6), which I do prefer. Of course, there’s these Lee jean shorts(7), too if you live in a warmer climate and just aren’t ready to give up the cutoffs. I even like (depending on the length of the short), a blazer or oversized sweater with jean shorts. Is that a fashion faux pas?

FANCY NANCY

When it comes to something a little more elevated, sequins are in. For me, this doesn’t translate to everyday life, but you can find camisoles to pair under a blazer or even this sort of strappy dress that you could dress down with a favorite oversized sweater. Going into the Christmas season, I’m all for a bit of sparkle. Just seems a bit overmuch on any given normal day. But do you guys love this?

There’s sequined joggers (8) or balloon sleeve sweater that looks best in this rich green shade(9). It has decent reviews on Amazon, too, which is a pro since you never know what is going to be good quality. Easy to also make casual by pairing it with black jeans and a black tee (both possible closet staples) is this open sequined jacket in the color ‘mermaid’(10); would you wear this?

For more fancier options, this sleeveless a-line cocktail dress would be pretty for those Christmas parties or you can make it a bit less formal by adding an oversized sweater, one you probably have in your closet already. Finally, there’s a more fitted sequined blazer(11) or there is a long “duster” option(12). All of which bring on the strong sequin vibes!

LAYERING

Coats are supposedly VERY in according to a few sources. So things like trench coats in particular will have a moment, one spotlight was this upcoming designer capsule item from Target which is a scallop edge for a bit of flair. It also comes in like a tan, camel color which is very in, too. I’ll likely still go for a shacket type coat like this one which has cute colors(13), but if the occasion calls for it, a trench could be fun.

This long button up looks cute with its “puff” sleeves(14) and the colors of the plaid are gorgeous, too!

LEATHER AND CLASSIC BLAZERS

One of the trends I see Woman and Home promoting is leather. Not sure how I feel about this. I picked up a pair of leather pants, that weren’t a skinny leg, a while back and they kind of “squeak” which means it’s a no go for me. I’m sure some are better than others, but how do we feel about this trend?

They say to add it in with a button up that’s leather over cotton button ups or go for a leather trouser pant. There is also a leather bomber jacket that though cropped looks cute.

Despite being in for a few years now, the blazer is still a thing. Amazon has a casual khaki blazer that has decent reviews(15). There’s an essential blazer from Target(16) that comes in four color options or I like the look of this one from Target (VERY oversized) and am loving that there is a pink option(17) which we talk about the reason why later.

THE NO-NOS OF FASHION

According to WhoWhatWear, a fashion color report says that autumnal shades is out. I’ll likely still be sporting some of these shades either because some of my most favorite sweaters boast the shades or just because I want to. But either way, they do say “spring” shades are more the in look. Makes me kind of question why, but ok. We’ll see what trends with the colors in new autumn drops this year at our favorite retailers. Speaking of colors…

THINK PINK

One of the things about this season’s fashion is the colors. So this year, one is the color pink. Honestly, I’m here for pink to have its moment. Do I want it all the time? No, but pink rarely if ever gets a standout moment and if this fall is its time to shine, I’m here for it.

Some styles in the shades of pink family include this button up in the color ‘blush’ with a pretty floral print (guessing in person this pulls more coral!)(18). I love how it’s styled by the boutique, right down to the knit cap. Though not my style, if you want to add some pink that’s not overwhelming to your wardrobe, this teal tunic dress with a romantic rose overlay might be what you’re looking for.

This Pink Outside the Box sweater in a kind of boxier style(19) is currently out of stock, but you can sign up for email alerts. It looks super cute and may even be something I pick up if it comes back. Called fuchsia, there also this style that’s a button up, waffle shirt that has the boxy styling, too(20). Going back to our blazer heading, Target has this oversized (emphasis on that fit) blazer in pink too(21). Perhaps a fit you could pair with one of these cami style shirts in multiple colors, including in this pink (rose) with a lace detail that would be fabulous for layering.

VARSITY SCHOOL SPIRIT

This really seems to all play into the 90s vibe, too, which means we’re full circle. In a couple of articles, I also saw forms of “school” but make it adult or some type of “varsity” being an in style. I see this as working using something like this Varsity style jacket from Target. It has stripes at the bottom of the sleeves and collars(22). Or also from the same place, this letterman style faux leather jacket for women(23). There’s even variations of this elsewhere like this blue women’s varsity style jacket(24).

Additionally playing into this would be shorter skirts, but also a sweater vest like you see at Target or this neutral but also, they have PINK style with a white pattern and a crop fit(25). I haven’t really come on board with the sweater vest idea, but I suppose if I would add one to my closest it would look something like this and paired with a dress or the classic oversized button down and used as a layering piece. To complete everything, there are these platform Puma casual sneaker in pink(26) (with lots of positive reviews!).
