INSPIRATION FOR HOW TO DRESS LIKE A FAVORITE MOVIE OR TV CHARACTER

Playing fairytale dress up is probably something we all did in childhood. We would play a princess or maybe for some of us, it was pretending to be a fan favorite young wizard. Either way, we played dress up. At my house, it was mostly a box of old fabric that would be used for ballgowns. I’m not one of them, but some of us may love to attend costume parties this time of year, and this always reminds me to ask, what sort of characters’ fashion can we copy? That question inspires today’s dress like a movie and TV character publication.

LIST | BOSS DAY: 10 OF THE BEST BOSS CHARACTERS

Sadly, most of these are universal in that no one will really know who they are outside of an era. However, I will probably mostly share items or looks that you can wear in our daily lives. Instead, we’re sharing some looks that remind me of pop culture and apply to daily lives. So I’m pulling pieces that aren’t β€œdress up” that we can wear in daily lives while being inspired by a favorite character.

DRESS UP LIKE A MOVIE AND TV CHARACTER

THE 1920s FASHIONISTA FLAPPER

This styling is a wide range of characters, including Downton Abbey. Lady Mary always has the best kind of fashion alongside the rest of the women in her family. If you want flapper fashion that isn’t about dress up and applies more to your daily life. You can also go more casual but still be inspired by Lady Mary or her sister, Lady Edith with less formal wear. Copy Mary’s recent β€˜A New Era’ look with a feminine blouse like this 1950s vintage style(1) or this style that is much more chill and casual in a beige shade(2). To go a step further in being inspired by Mary’s look, pair it with these wide leg pants in dark green; a trouser pant in mint green(3); or for a simpler vibe, there’s a paperbag pant option(4) too.

Not sure how I’d style this, but here’s a fancier lace sleeve button up vintage inspired blouse in this gorgeous green(5), too!

Go more glam and dress up by styling these for those seasonal parties you may attend. This would include something like this 1920s Flapper Dress in rose gold or this V-neck style in this Women’s Beaded Maxi Dress in β€œapricot” or β€œgreen.”(6) You can pair these with a shoe like this teardrop style heel. If you want flapper fashion that isn’t about dress up and applies more to your daily life for those seasonal parties you may be attending over the next two months. Nordstrom has these flapper-style dresses ideal for those fun events you may attend. They have fringe styling but a more modern design. There’s this fringe, high-low style design in gold (all the glitter-y pretty!), too.

Like Lady Edith’s look? Try this vintage floral design(7); or this orange kimono(8) with a beige, wide-leg pant(9) like these or there’s also a beige straight leg option(10) if that’s more the vibe! If kimono’s aren’t your thing, you could also style this pretty (though hard to know for sure from online) softer orange blouse(11). And yes, most kimono’s are tagged as beach coverups, but I see them styled all the time. So have fun with it. Finish either of these looks with some long necklaces, and you’ve been influenced by the sister’s Crawley.

AGATHA RAISIN from AGATHA RAISIN

Agatha is without question one of THE most fun TV characters to search for. Her style is outlandish, but fun and I’m here for it. I found a couple of things that would suit. Like this crazy patterned β€œpop art” blazer(12) or also a blazer, this style in a green print(13). Also, this β€œvelvet” blazer in green(14) (and yes, it does have a matching trouser pant)(14) is very much Agatha’s styling in the Haunted House! She pairs it with a hot pink blouse, but you could go simpler with a tee and a hot pink shoe. The ratings are so-so, so make of that what you will.

Speaking of hot pink, Agatha, a few seasons back, also wears a pink jumpsuit, which was (or is?) very on trend! If you live in a warmer climate and don’t mind so much leg, there’s this a cotton, almost crinkle like material option with a sleeve; another pink linen romper from Asos(15); another one is a pink sleeveless romper from Lulu’s(16); or a longer V-neck option(17). The ratings are decent for this one.

BELLE from BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

Belle is a timeless character we all love. While it may be impossible to adopt her style for everyday, we’ll see if we can find a few options.

If you’re going for a costume party look, this floor length chiffon dress(18) could be a good option, albeit it’s listed as a bridesmaid dress. This may be too dramatic even for a costume party, but there’s this sweetheart tulle gown option too(19).

If you want things to style in a more realistic fashion, there’s a 1950s dress in a pretty blue shade(20)(because blue is Belle’s first iconic color!). There’s another option with a bow tie in front too, but in a similar shade of blue(21). You can also find other dresses that resemble vintage styles in yellow colors, too. One being this a-line cocktail dress(22). If a dress isn’t your vibe, I found this sweet and feminine short-sleeve collar blouse, too(23).

CHER from CLUELESS

If you love the pop culture icon Cher from the 1995 film Clueless (a loose re-telling of Jane Austen’s Emma), you’ll love knowing NOW is your time. The 90s fashion is ALL in and so this is your time to dress like Cher. I have to be honest, and say most of the things I’m sharing in Cher’s section is not my vibe. However I’ve been told and see others told when we react negatively to a fashion look that it must mean I think garbage bags are the only good looks (or something of that kind). I 100% don’t but I guess when you don’t like a look, that’s where some go. So I know I’m not the popular consensus of what looks good.

The one thing I could see myself buying and styling is this yellow plaid, open front blazer(24) (we all remember that yellow blazer set, right?). It’s cute and blazers have been having a moment for a while now. Guessing this will end at some point. There’s also a black β€œtennis skirt”(25); or an option that is the tennis skirt style but with red stripes(26) that would be kind of the look Cher sports. There’s a suspender β€œskater skirt” look(27) that feels very Clueless too; or this above knew dress too(28). Add a pair of black combat boots(29) or depending on what the rest of your outfit looks like, there’s these lace up chunky heel white boots(30).

MADISON AND ALEXA from MY LIFE IS MURDER

For Madison, one thing we’re placing in her closet is this leopard print cardigan(31). The girl does all sorts of crazy pattern mixing and colors! Putting this boho long cardigan(32) for Madison too. It seems she truly has no limits on what she pairs together. This unique β€œwave” cropped cardigan is another piece(33) I’m using for Madison too. Just because she’s fun like this pattern. For two final pieces to attribute to Madison, we’re giving her one blouse with a fun abstract pattern to its design(34) and this orange double-breasted blazer vest(35).

Giving Alexa an abstract blouse too, because she does sport them here and there. This one is a white, black, blue and red pattern(36). A color block cardigan(37) isn’t something I would have put in Alex’s closet, but series three Alexa is WAY more into color vs. neutrals. She does wear longer pieces quite a lot. This double-breasted trench coat in green(38) feels like something she may wear. Where she used to wear blues and neutrals, she is more a bright color person this season. It’s been fun!
