WEDDING DRESSES ON SCREEN THAT ARE PRETTY AND MOSTLY UNIQUE

When it comes to the wedding scenes in movies or TV shows, it’s safe to say, I find many of them quite pretty. But sometimes even the prettiest wedding scene can feature the bride in a dress that isn’t quite as lovely. Or vice versa, the prettiest dress is set against a wedding scene that is less than memorable. Just for fun and since this time of year is commonly used for a storytelling trope of this being “wedding season,” we’re going to find some of the pretty and unique movie wedding dresses you’ll see. Because we like to have fun, and why not?

Some of these you’ll find ridiculous choices (I am sure), and some you may agree with me. Which is fine, we can still have fun even in disagreement over the silly topic like movie wedding dresses. Additionally I will note that while there are more movie wedding gowns that would be unique, they aren’t really my style so I probably did veto them. I tend to be a simple is elegant kind of person. However, maybe we round up more in a second part, right? I did have to recruit a bit of help from some members of a Facebook group I pop into now and then, so some of these are after their fabulous reminders and some were ones I already planned on adding. But let’s get into the fun and point of this list, shall we?

PRETTY & UNIQUE MOVIE WEDDING DRESSES

Note: There may be/will be spoilers below

MALIN ACKERMAN and AMY ADAMS in 27 DRESSES and THE WEDDING DATE

Who: Tess (from 27 Dresses), baby sister, has everything handed to her and is spoiled, but learns valuable lessons; Amy (The Wedding Date), youngest sister, spoiled who looks for forgiveness

I’m putting these two together for two reasons. One I don’t think either of their gowns are the most unique I’ve seen, and two they’re similar to each other. Also, it’s fun to realize that the characters are quite similar too. I love the simplicity of Amy’s in The Wedding Date. The one layer veil and the sleek look of it makes the dress stand out. Thanks to Catherine for reminding me of Malin’s dress, though I didn’t really find good photos of it!

JULIE ANDREWS in THE SOUND OF MUSIC

Who: Maria, a novice who’s curious and dreamer nature causes Mother Superior to have her work as governess for seven children

This dress is gorgeous. It’s “plain” and simple on one hand, but that is actually its strength. So much beauty in the entire look though like anything, there’d be things I’d style a little differently. The entire wedding scene takes on a very reverent kind of approach, which is a cumulation of the unique love story between Maria and the Captain. I did see recently that some viewers are bothered by the “solve a problem like Maria” song playing over the wedding, which I get, but I guess this never did bother me. Instead, the gown and scene itself is just so lovely that I ignore that or its a non-issue.

MEGAN FOLLOWS in ANNE OF GREEN GABLES: THE CONTINUING STORY

Who: Anne Shirley, teacher and fiery redhead, dreamer and adopted daughter of Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert

When I looked this one up, it’s not quite as pretty as my mind remembers it, but I still think it has beauty and I have to add it because it’s Anne Shirley, and most of us WAITED a long time for this girl to have this moment. It’s somber, yes, but I think they still found pockets of joy in their day.

ANNE HATHAWAY in BRIDE WARS

Who: Emma, quiet, always yields to others and “accepts” things when maybe sometimes she shouldn’t

Before it is destroyed, I think Emma’s dress is pretty. It’s more of a timeless and elegant style and contrary to popular opinion, I think classic or timeless or “old” can be just as gorgeous, “sexy” (if that’s your vibe) or pretty as any modern look.

JENNIFER LOPEZ in SHOTGUN WEDDING

Who: Darcy, lawyer struggling with saying ‘I do’ in a high pressure gathering

I know this dress is supposed to be “fugly” and not at all the vibe, but I think it has potential. I don’t love every element, like how low cut it is, but I think the full skirt is pretty and I like the sleeves too. It’s way more unique than most in the genre, and I kins of feel like this alone means this dress deserves to have its moment in the spotlight.

CHARLOTTE RITCHIE in GRANTCHESTER

Who: Bonnie Evans, single mother and cousin of Cathy Keating, spitfire who appears in series seven

I cannot really find great photos of Bonnie’s gown, but seeing Charlotte Ritchie (from Call the Midwife) show up to play a role in this series is LOVELY. Plus her dress is pretty in a delicate sort of way. I also really like this character and the story leading to her putting on this gorgeous white dress. It’s minor, but feels like a nice end. unique movie wedding dresses

SARA TOPHAM in ELOISE AT CHRISTMASTIME

Who: Only daughter of the Plaza Hotel owner, Rachel, smart young lady about to marry

Sara’s dress while playing Rachel in this Wonderful World of Disney production is lovely. Not one I could ever pull off, but I like that it’s unique and has the appearance of snowflakes, perfect for the film. It also just looks really pretty in its “finished” state. Very put together and simple but still unique. Thanks to Grace for reminding me of this one!

LYDIA WILSON in THE MAKING OF A LADY

Who: Emily, impoverished woman who works as a companion only to be unceremoniously fired, and offered a solution by a kind and wealthy military man.

Emily’s dress is lovely in a more kind of “structured way.” Still I think the entire ensemble is gorgeous and very regal in appearance.
