COSTUME PARTY IDEAS: DRESS LIKE A 1920s LADY, BARBIE, GOTH GIRL, AND MORE

by

Like I say in some form every year, Halloween is not my thing. But I do enjoy creating some content like movie lists of “spooky” movies or just something that’s more atmospheric like a book or film that “feels” darker. If you’re like me and don’t celebrate October 31 but go to costume parties or you do celebrate and have a party to go to, we’re going to pick a few fun options for some costume party or Halloween costume ideas. These are, at least this is my goal, going to be simple and easy, but if they aren’t “complete” for a vision, hopefully if you’re struggling, it can spark an idea. And therefore, you add those things that complete the look.

Among these ideas is options for a Barbie related look (we have to) plus some period drama attire and just some random, easy ideas too. At least this is the game plan in my mind. Whether this is how things will shape up once I collect said ideas, well this remains to be seen. Let’s get our search feature working and see what we find.

HALLOWEEN COSTUME IDEAS

OLDIES BUT GOODIES

If you like revisiting an era that we’ve forgotten about or simply love the fashion from an era not your own, now is the time to play dress up.

This gold v-neck flapper dress is fun and ideal for anyone who loves Downton Abbey or just wants to dress in 1920s attire. Another option is this gold number with bead detailing and more length. In the same sphere, one option is this green fringe flapper number. You can shop more styles and colors at the Amazon homepage of this company.

Keep with the popularity of pink, but if Barbie isn’t your thing, there’s this “Pink Lady” jacket that would be fun with a pair of leggings. These “cat eye” sunglasses or glasses, plus saddle shoes are fun. Any of which would be the perfect finishing addition to any 1950s ensemble. If you’re more about a Jane Austen era, there is this purple regency number or this more neutral ensemble in what the site calls yellow.

POPULAR CULTURE

In culture, there may be an overabundance of pink and Barbie, and things, but things like the Netflix show (albeit one that debuted in late 2022), Wednesday also made a splash. Grab this long sleeved, white collared number and don’t forget to add those braids in your hair. This black feather shawl situation is also very Wednesday Addams as are these pinstripe tights. Other hyped movies included Mario Brothers. Amazon has this Mario Brothers inspired set. The Little Mermaid also made headlines. If you want to go that route, but not a specific costume in that you buy a mermaid set on the shelf, these mermaid leggings may be what you’re looking for. It’s not a look I could ever pull off, but some could and would. Add some shell jewelry or a shell hair piece with a favorite t-shirt to complete the look.

Of course, anything and everything Taylor Swift has been the thing in 2023. Early this year, we put together an inspiration post for outfit ideas if you were heading to Swift’s Eras Tour. We still have that up, but will reshare some items here too. Such as these high waisted, straight let jeans with butterfly imagery (or flowers) something that would pair with a white tee and tennis shoe, the jeans are a nod to Swift’s debut album. Giving nod to Speak Now is this off the shoulder purple option. For 1989, we found this fun ruffle sleeve cloud dress. These patchwork style jeans is more unique and looks fitting with the rep era. For accessories, one option is this brighter shade of blue butterfly clip set. Plus if you visit the post (link above), you can browse all the albums.

THINK PINK! BARBIE OUTFIT INSPIRATION

Though I didn’t type in anything Barbie related (more pink search words), this search result yields this pink jumpsuit that is marketing as a costume party (and Margot Robbie!) look. If a dress and the pink checked one specifically is more to your liking there is this vintage inspired dress option one or this option in a two-piece set. This doesn’t look exactly like the lookalike Barbie ensemble Robbie sports while walking the red carpet, but here’s a v-neck black number or this spaghetti strap dress could work to duplicate the look. Add some diamonds and if you’re creative, add some tulle to the waist or shoulder or use it in the back with the straps creating a bow or something, that way you’re bringing in the tulle effect, too.

Do you celebrate All Hallows Eve? Do you go to costume parties? What is your costume going to be? Did any of these spark a new idea? Let us know in the comments all of your thoughts. We love to chat.
