‘SON-IN-LAW’: AN OUTLANDISH AND QUIRKY 90S COMEDY

Featuring some familiar faces, Son-In-Law is a 90s comedy that is a tiny bit outlandish.

Son In Law (1993) Film Review

Heading to college is a culture shock situation for Rebecca Warner (Carla Gugino). Raised in a loving family but in a small town on a farm, Rebecca leaves behind her childhood sweetheart and heads to California for college. Experiencing a culture shock and meeting people who she has nothing in common with, Rebecca plans to leave and head home again but then her quirky and outlandish RA Crawl (Pauly Shore) convinces her to stay. Taking her under his winy, he gives her a makeover and helps her find her place.

Then she heads home again for Thanksgiving… and Becca is faced with more challenges.

FILM REVIEW | ‘FLETCH’: ANOTHER COMEDY FROM THE 1980S

'SON IN LAW’: AN OUTLANDISH AND QUIRKY 90S COMEDY. Carla Gugino stars in this 90s comedy centered around #Thanksgiving. #Movies #MovieReview #90sComedy #90sMovie Share on X

This is one of those 1990s titles I didn’t see but in my quest to re-watch some of the older films I did see, I decided to jump in and watch this one. The film is all about the complications of family and while it tries hard to be a comedy, which is a favorite genre, this one doesn’t quite make the mark. son in law

The script is a funny premise and there’s these scenes that are funny. But overall, this just isn’t a movie that really works. There’s something about Shore’s character that’s a little annoying and it doesn’t work then because of where they leave him. The trajectory of his life with Becca seems inauthentic because of their other interactions. son in law

All that to say, Son-In-Law does put out some laughs. It also has some young stars in their early days that went on to become a TV or film star. It’s fun too because it’s centered around Thanksgiving which is a season I don’t usually see play background to a movie.

Content: there is sexual innuendo and comments. There’s discussion between a couple dating about losing their virginity to each other. A prank is played on someone that includes drugging people and making it look as though they spent a night together. There is some profanity but nothing beyond its PG-13 rating. son in law
