POP CULTURE NEWS ONE HUNDRED and SEVENTEEN
If you’re a fan of some of the streaming TV shows enjoying a high right now, you may like to know that two were renewed this past week. Apple TV+ opted to give their (very) modern period drama The Buccaneers a second year. This should all mean we’ll have more time discovering what comes next for Nan, Lizzy and Conchita. Also earning a season two renewal from Netflix is My Life with the Walter Boys. Based on the novel of the same name, season one’s finale was meant to be “empowering,” or something of the kind (according to the creator), but honestly, I found it unkind and lacking from the lead character doing the right thing.
In other Apple TV+ news, their recent film The Family Plan has become their “most streamed” movie “ever” according to articles. If you haven’t seen it, let me just say, it is dang entertaining.
More renewal news comes from HBO with a third season order of The Gilded Age. A fan favorite for many, the show is a little less soapy than Julian Fellowes Downton Abbey, but the creator still adds a bit of drama here and there, while focusing on fabulous and intriguing characters in a drama set in 1800s America and showcases clashes between old and new money.
If you’re planning to see the rom-com Anyone But You that everyone is talking about, review headlines have it down as “fun” but also “forgettable,” this because the tropes we (admittedly) often love are so engrained that (in my words) nothing is really special or unique anymore. Still, sometimes it’s the comfort of that which makes us like something.
February 19th will be an episode NCIS fans won’t want to miss. It will pay tribute to the late David McCallum who played the lovable ME Donald “Ducky” Mallard. The episode, which actor Brian Dietzen (Ducky’s trusty assistant Jimmy Palmer) co-wrote, claims to have a “very touching” scene. McCallum was also one of the original cast members of the 20+ year TV show.
