POP CULTURE NEWS ONE HUNDRED and SIXTEEN
MAKING ROM-COMS BIG AGAIN?
Speaking, at the premiere, of her upcoming (and R-rated) romantic comedy Anyone But You, star Sydney Sweeney says, “I think people need rom coms back in their life…” and I agree. We do. But we need good ones. Not ones that are R-rated “just because.” Whether or not this one will fall into that category or not, I don’t know. But I suspect it does. Her and co-star Glen Powell, spoke on rom-coms, specifically for the big screen during the premiere. She finished with the remark, “We made the rom-com big again.” I think this will probably do well (ticket wise) because of the cast, but I don’t think this will be THE rom-com that puts you all in your feels. I get that romantic comedies today are generationally different, but they still often miss that something that puts viewers in those feels. I think the underrated (recent) romances like What’s Love Got to Do with It? or even (yes, it is streaming) Love at First Sight is more in line with that type of emotion.
LAST THINGS
Following their summertime success with Barbie, Mattel and Lionsgate are in the early development stages of an American Girl movie. Outside of the screenplay writer, not much else is known right now. Lindsey Anderson Beer (who wrote Sierra Burgess is a Loser) will pen the script, and also produce.
Following a “massive” bid battle for the “action comedy” Calamity Hustle, apparently, it’s breaking news to see that Warner Bros. has won said title. The flick will feature box office draws Ryan Reynolds and Channing Tatum starring as brothers with Reynolds playing the more upstanding cop brother and Tatum the “low level” criminal who requires the help of his brother. The idea is this will launch a franchise, according to reports, and is likened to something like Lethal Weapon. pop culture news one hundred and sixteen
If you love the Ocean’s heist movies with George Clooney, there may be an eventual addition to the three already in the world. Already in the works is a 60s set flick with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in a kind of prequel story to Ocean’s Eleven. But Clooney recently said that he has “a really good script for another Ocean’s now” in his hands. What do you think? Would they make a fourth flick?
