POP CULTURE NEWS ONE HUNDRED and THIRTY-TWO
EMPOWERMENT AT THE COST OF “EMASCULATION”
One of the newsmakers this past week was Shakira. While giving an interview for Allure, she was asked if she saw Barbie. When she replies that she did, she says that her sons hated it, going on to say, “I’m raising two boys. I want ’em to feel powerful too [while] respecting women. I like pop culture when it attempts to empower women without robbing men of their possibility to be men, to also protect and provide. […] men have a purpose in society and women have another purpose as well. We complement each other, and that complement should not be lost.”
DISCUSSION | EMPOWERMENT SHOULDN’T COST CONDEMNING THE OPPOSITE SEX
Certain social pages were obsessed with this quote, using it to prove a point about emasculation in culture. I think Shakira’s thoughts as a mother of sons on how culture (film) depicts men is fair and very honest. I never understand women who want the future to be female when they’re raising sons. However, what these accounts maybe don’t mention is, Shakira isn’t about being a shrinking violet when it comes to her sex. Nope, she’s all about being powerful and believing that the patriarchy exists and silences women. I don’t agree with the whole interview, but wanting to be better when it comes to writing, I did read her other thoughts, and had thoughts of my own, which we did share earlier this week.
OH, SNAP! SHE’S BACK
According to a new story, Reese Witherspoon will be producing a Legally Blonde TV show that will land on Amazon. According to the story, it will be “set in the world” of Legally Blonde and will be penned by “Gossip Girl veterans Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage.” Are you curious or do you think TV will ruin the charm?
LAST THINGS
Following strong ratings for ABC, Will Trent is renewed for a third season.
In the opposite of a renewal, NBC has cancelled its reboot of Quantum Leap after a mere two seasons.
If you keep track of all the Christmas movie news, you may like knowing that Mario Lopez and his real-life wife, Courtney will be airing in a romance for Great American Family. Access Hollywood’s host, Lopez alongside Broadway star Courtney will star in the comedy about Lopez as the mayor “of an idyllic community” that is currently titled My Grown-Up Christmas Wish. The film follows Lopez’s character who’s childhood wish list starts to come true. Also, part of the equation is the return of his childhood best friend, Nina Meyers (Courtney Lopez). This won’t be Lopez’s first Christmas movie, he previously starred with Melissa Joan Hart in Holiday in Handcuffs, plus a couple other titles.
Speaking of Christmas movies, rumor has it Jennifer Garner will continue her relationship with Netflix in the Christmas picture Mrs. Claus. There’s no information about the plot, but Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine will produce the film. This will mark the fourth recent movie between Garner and Netflix following Yes Day and Family Leave, along with the popular The Adam Project.
If you love Suits, and delight in its resurgence on streaming platform Netflix, you may also love to hear about the show in a podcast.
