IF YOU LIKE ‘MY LIFE WITH THE WALTER BOYS,’ TRY THESE SEVEN SHOWS
If a hyped TV show is coming up the pipe, chances are, it can be likened to something else. This is probably even more true of the stories that get tagged as young adult, though honestly, we still watch ‘em and enjoy them all. Mostly. One of the recent young adult novels that was adapted, this time by Netflix, is My Life with the Walter Boys. This brings us to our topic today and our ‘if you like My Life with the Walter Boys, try these’ list.

IF YOU LIKE ‘MY LIFE WITH THE WALTER BOYS,’ TRY THESE SEVEN SHOWS. Sharing a few TV shows and films to watch if you liked #MyLifewiththeWalterBoys. #TVShow #Netflix #NetflixShow #WalterBoys Share on XBased on the novel by Ali Novak, this plot follows Jackie, a New Yorker who loses her entire life when she’s left alone, and must move to Nebraska where her mother’s best friend lives. Katherine Walter lives not by herself though, but with her husband on their ranch, and the ten boys she’s raising. This becomes more than just a culture shock for Jackie, the girl who loves fashion and checklists. The show branches out from there in ten episodes with a series one ending that is said to be “empowering” or something, though in reality I find it taking an easy way out.
Entertaining despite its flaws, My Life with the Walter Boys isn’t the only show or movie of its kind you can watch if you also find this one fun. Below we’re going to collect some of the titles you can discover that feel like watch-alikes for this Netflix dramady.
IF YOU LIKE MY LIFE WITH THE WATLER BOYS, TRY THESE
EVERWOOD
This is an oldie show set in Colorado (like My Life with the Walter Boys) and chronicles newcomers in a small town. Treat Williams plays the dad, there’s Chris Pratt as the bully and Emily VanCamp, both pre Marvel days, plays the pretty girl who Williams’ son befriends. You can watch the show, at publication, on Freevee
Note: I’ve only seen a few episodes, but the show is TV-PG or TV-14, depending on the episode. There is death and some romantic entanglements.
HEARTLAND
All about family, and more family friendly (what I saw), this Canadian drama has many seasons and follows a family living on a ranch and the ups and downs of their lives through its many years on air. You can watch the show on Tubi, at publication
Note: the show is TV-PG or TV-14, depending on the episode. There is death and some romantic entanglements. if you like my life with the walter boys try these
THE KISSING BOOTH (FILM TRILOGY)
Lots of people (or most everyone?) hates this film trilogy from Netflix. I think they’re cute. Are they good role models for the target audience? No. But I’m not watching them through that lens. It follows two brothers and El, the girl who is best friends with the younger brother but has always had a crush on his older, troubled brother. You can watch the movies on Netflix exclusively
Note: this one is a solid TV-14 rating and deals with teenagers having sex, there is also some profanity including (if I’m remember the right scene with the right movie) an f-word. The lead guy may also bother some viewers with his tendency to be in an argument.
NEVER HAVE I EVER
A show that has lots of devoted fans, perhaps because it’s from creator Mindy Kaling, I watched season one of this Netflix comedy. It was fine, but nothing I immediately adored, so I never picked it up again in season two. You can watch the show on Netflix exclusively
Note: I didn’t watch beyond season one, but there are multiple mentions of having sex and various innuendo. There’s also characters who like the same sex. There is also some profanity in this TV-14 show. if you like my life with the walter boys try these
THE SUMMER I TURNED PRETTY
Based on novels by Jenny Han, this is from Prime and is a series, about to start a third season. I haven’t seen it, but it looks like its all the angsty teen drama right down to the love triangle. I did read the first two books, and while they’re all about teen drama, they are entertaining. You can watch the show on Prime exclusively
Note: this show has a TV-14 rating.
TO ALL THE BOYS I’VE LOVED BEFORE (FILM TRILOGY)
Also from Jenny Han, this is based on her most popular series of books, of the same name. The films have some differences, but I think overall, these are solid adaptations of sweet novels. They follow a teen girl whose letters, the ones she wrote to crushes through the years, accidentally get mailed to said crushes. You can watch the movies on Netflix exclusively
Note: these are TV-14, and for the genre, are relatively clean stories though there is sex mentioned
XO, KITTY
This one is more “adult” than My Life with the Walter Boys, but still has a definite YA theme with its teen characters. It follows Kitty (obviously) who happens to be the sister of Lara Jean Convey from To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. The series is too much YA for me with its shifting emotions and constant “additions” of a new crush and possible romance. You can watch the show on Netflix exclusively if you like my life with the walter boys try these
Note: If it bothers you, this one has same sex, bi-sex and heterosexual relationships that shift and change, and even characters shift their perspective. The show is TV-14.
