‘AN UNCOMMON GRACE’ IS STORY ABOUT LOSS AND HOPE

A film under the former banner of Hallmark Movies and Mysteries (now simply Hallmark Mystery), An Uncommon Grace is an interesting drama about loss.

An Uncommon Grace (2017) Hallmark TV Film Review

Returning from a combat zone where she served as a nurse, Grace Conner (Jes Macallan) is haunted. She has memories of loss and burdens no person should have to bear. Living with her grandmother, Grace now has as choice to make. Her return back to her grandmother’s farm is to help her grandmother get stronger. What she doesn’t expect is to find she is pulled into the murder of a nearby neighbor.

Levi Troyer (Sean Faris) is the eldest son of one of the victims and stepson of the man who is murdered. Once he ensures the safety of his young siblings, he and Grace wind up working together and encountering greater danger than either of them would ever expect…

‘AN UNCOMMON GRACE’ IS STORY ABOUT LOSS AND HOPE. Review of the 2017 #Hallmark drama. Share on X

If memory serves me, I saw this film years ago. But as I watched An Uncommon Grace, in what I assumed was my second time see the film, I didn’t remember anything about the film. The story or rather the specific kind of religious backstory is a familiar one to many I’ve seen. The strictness of the Amish lifestyle and the “shunning” isn’t new. Its accuracy isn’t something I can attest to, but despite this kind of jarring reality (even for the movies), I did find things to enjoy about this film.

I don’t think this 2017 production is up to the standards of titles we find on the network today. The sets or “look” of them just isn’t the same. Same goes for the acting. Many of the supporting characters don’t add much to the film. I did quite enjoy Sean Faris (as I have in the other Hallmark titles I’ve seen him in) and have to admire how Jes Macallan plays the role. I think she fills the shoes well of this character and respect that the opening sees her “messy” and “real” rather than pristine. The emotion of the scene calls for this.

Though it’s not as polished as the films you may find in this genre now, An Uncommon Grace isn’t bad. Some of the scripting isn’t great, but overall, this film has its moments and I think Grace is an admirable heroine.

Content: aside from some “tense” moments, there’s not much to note. The film is TV-PG for the murder of someone (we see the body with minimal blood). Grace recalls memories of her time in a warzone.
