10 THINGS TO WATCH IF YOU LIKE ‘ART DETECTIVES’
Dropping on Acorn TV is a new crime dramedy that is the same, but also different, which is what inspires us to look at it in our “watchalikes” list. So, let’s look at things to watch if you like Art Detectives, which is an interesting and compelling story.
LIST | 12 OF THE GOOD SCENES BETWEEN FATHERS AND CHILDREN
10 THINGS TO WATCH IF YOU LIKE ‘ART DETECTIVES.’ Looking at some shows you may enjoy if you watch #ArtDetectives, a series from #AcornTV! Share on XAn Acorn TV exclusive streamer, Art Detectives has Stephen Moyer as DI Mick Palmer, a detective who looks at crimes differently by looking at the clues through artwork or leading cases that have art tied to them. The show is really good and entertaining, and very easy to binge watch. Moyer also serves as EP on this show, too. In light of it just dropping on Netflix, let’s look at some watchalike titles, most of which aren’t any kind of “exact” copies of this new drop, but they have some similarities. The goal of this list is to find titles that use “different” methods for its heroes or heroines to solve the cases they are a part of.
Also setting apart these titles (below) from Art Detectives is the fact that the latter is an international drama, and 90%+ percent of the time, those titles are different. Usually in a good way. So here we go.
THINGS to WATCH if you like ART DETECTIVES
HIGH POTENTIAL
This one follows a single mum who has a brilliant mind. As a result, she sees things quite differently than most and views the cases that she sees at the police station (she works as a night shift cleaner) in a unique and very different manner than the detectives working hard on the cases.

This ability soon is discovered, and it puts Morgan (played brilliantly by Kaitlin Olsen) in the viewfinder of the precinct caption. Morgan agrees to help, but she also wants her teenage daughter to have closure so she makes a deal – she’ll help solve cases, but she also wants the resources to find her daughter’s missing father. The show, which debuted on ABC in the fall of 2024, was a success and was renewed for a second year. Needless to say, I still need to finish the first season so as to then anticipate the return of these characters. This one also shares something in common with Art Detectives, which is that it too is (kind of) inspired by a 2017 French show. So there is that, too!

LEVERAGE
This show is more on the “white collar” side of crimes and follows a group of people, each with a specialized set of skills, who help the “little guy” overcome something that threatens them in some way. The show is quite entertaining. The show was originally on TNT for five years, then more recently it came back with most of its original cast and is now on Prime Video as Leverage: Redemption.

THE LIBRARIANS: THE NEXT CHAPTER
This one is perhaps a stretch, and it’s more comedy than anything (I don’t think there are typically murders to solve) however the show does deal with artifacts and art, so if you like that angle in stories, well then you may enjoy this one. There is also another show simply called The Librarians and a trio of films that introduces it all in which Noah Wyle stars.

LIE to ME
This show follows the character Cal Lightman, owner of his own business, a man who interviews suspects and people, all with the goal to try and determine if they are lying or not. He works with investigators often and with a loyal business partner, and two very ambitious hires who, well, let’s just say he clashes with.

LUDWIG
This one is about a puzzle creator whose brother goes missing. Beckoned by his brother’s wife, the recluse (who is also a twin brother) arrives at her home where he learns she wants him to get into his office, which is at a police precinct, in order to solve the mystery of his disappearance. This one has some sense of comedy, and is “cozy” too so it’s kind of the best of both worlds.

THE MENTALIST
This show is fun (at least the early seasons are) and follows a man, Patrick, who works with a California bureau of investigators. His goal is to capture (and likely do worse!) the man who brutally murdered his wife and daughter. He built a career on being someone who can be an intermediary between the living and the dead, but he uses his clever observation skills to help the team weed out the killer. It’s an interesting and entertaining show.

NUMB3RS
Following an FBI agent and his brilliant mathematician brother, this one has the pair working together to solve some complex cases. I binge watched this one years after it was off air, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s lots of fun and has a good cast, plus a bit of romance too.

SHERLOCK, bbc tv
Some of the cases that Benedict Cumberbatch solves involve artifacts or art, so I’m including this one. It’s different (as all of these shows are) but like any of the shows on this list, none are carbon copies for Art Detectives. Regardless, this one does have that British flair.

WHITE COLLAR
This one is indeed all about art, and primarily is more about, as its title tells us, white collar crimes instead of murders. Perhaps this also makes it the best tiles in our things to watch if you like Art Detectives feature.
It has Matt Bomer as Neal Cafferty a white collar criminal who, in order to lesson his criminal punishment, works with the FBI, a straight-laced agent in particular.

BONUS! BLOOD and TREASURE
Like The Librarians, perhaps this one doesn’t really “fit,” but we are just here to have fun and why not include this show? It’s underrated I think (in the sense of watching something fun) and is a great time with its on-then-off-then-on-again lovers. The show is about an FBI turned lawyer turned treasure hunter hero who pairs up with a master thief to track down Cleopatria. Eventually there are other works of art and artifacts, too.

MOVIES to CONSIDER
CODE of SILENCE
Adding this one because Stephen Moyer headlines. It’s “based on a true story” according to its poster art. According to its synopsis, this follows a detective who hires a deaf caterer who reads lips which helps in their investigations. Also, fun is the fact that this fall there are rumors that the show (which has a new cast, including Charlotte Ritchie), which is co-produced by BritBox, will drop in the U.S.

GAMBIT
Colin Firth leads this cast in an unusual role where he plays a man trying to get revenge on someone by setting up an art purchase that isn’t, shall we say, authentic. It’s quite entertaining and also has Cameron Diaz plus Alan Rickman.

The film kind of takes a bit of “getting used to” because of pacing and just the “feel” of the comedy. However, once you settle in, it’s really very funny. It’s from Joel and Ethan Coen.

THE MALTESE FALCON
A classic from 1941, this one features Humphrey Bogart as a private detective who gets tangled up in a case that involves a group of mysterious (and beautiful!) characters, and a priceless statue.

RED NOTICE
A Netflix release, this one isn’t about murder, if I remember right, but does have similar themes. There is an art thief and the globe trotting trio who spend most of the film trying to outwit each other. Or that’s my memory. It’s been a while since I watched this, but it was fun if I remember right and has Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot.

THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR
A kind of “iconic” story, this one has an older version (from the 60s and with Steve McQueen) and a newer remake which has Pierce Bronson. I cannot remember if I’ve seen the older version or not, but the remake has a kind of “cool” styling and follows a man who has an insurance investigator chasing him in pursuit of recovering priceless art she believe he steals.
The film is also high on being a kind of sexy thriller, too.
