‘FACKHAM HALL’: THE RIDICULOUS PERIOD COMEDY IS NOW STREAMING

One of the films that leaves us unsure quite what to expect or think, Fackham Hall is silly. Ironically (or perhaps not), this is also, in a nutshell, all any potential viewer needs to know.

Fackham Hall (2025) Film Review

Keeping Fackham Hall in the family is a matter of importance for the aristocratic Davenport family. This is why daughter Poppy (Emma Laird) is about to marry a cousin, and the man (Tom Felton) who will eventually inherit the estate. If they don’t marry, the Davenport family loses it all to him after every one of their male heirs dies, all in separate events. The invitations are sent, the parties are over, and now, on the bright and sunny day of the marriage, Poppy cannot manage to say “I do,” and instead runs off with an older and unambitious common man.

This then puts the headstrong and opinionated Rose (Thomasin McKenzie) in everyone’s sight. Her mother Lady Davenport (Katherine Waterston) decides that Rose will marry the cousin, thus securing the future of everyone, but then along comes Eric (Ben Radcliffe), a new hire who seems to catch Rose’s eye!

What does one say about this film? It’s one of those ridiculous movies no one is really sure what to think, but is also purposefully produced to be this type of movie. Because of this, I think we have to just let that cory and crazy in and enjoy it through that lens. If we don’t, I’m not entirely sure this will suit a larger audience.

‘FACKHAM HALL’: THE RIDICULOUS PERIOD COMEDY IS NOW STREAMING. A period drama spoof comedy featuring an impressive cast including Damian Lewis & Tom Felton.
Bleecker Street

A film meant to spoof titles like Downton Abbey (and other more modern slapstick comedies), I am quite impressed by the digs this one gets in for its period drama inspiration. I still adore Downton Abbey, and do think it’s a sublime story (in its lane), but can admit the laughs in this at its expense are mostly quite funny. The film kind of diverges into a mystery after its opening which mocks period drama, but still keeps things on the same side of crazy. Again, for this film, it works.

The cast is surprisingly good, and I think it feels like some of the actors really just go for it in terms of making their respective characters ridiculous. There is also Damian Lewis, Anna Maxwell Martin (who is always great), and in a narration role, Hayley Mills, too. So, the strong ensemble cast is here, which also reportedly once had Hero Fiennes Tiffin, and makes the film more of a curiosity.

The whole war bits are a little weird, but if you don’t mind comedies that are, well, goofy, then you may enjoy Fackham Hall. It’s not always a proper kind of funny, but there are laughs, and depending on your comedy preference, well this one may charm.

You can stream, at publication, Fackham Hall  with HBO Max; or digitally purchase the film on places like Prime Video

Content: this one has quite a bit of crude humor. There is a recounted story from the war about someone pleasuring themselves, and there is other implications about sex. A couple presumably has sex. We hear crude remarks about male anatomy and there is some profanity including the f-word. Someone is shot twice and later we see a body with blood and something sticking out from the person’s chest. In a flashback scene we also see this murder happening in which several means are used to kill this person. The film is rates R.
