25 YEARS WITH EMMETT AND ELLE FROM ‘LEGALLY BLONDE’
July 13 is a perfect day because on this day, over 20 years ago now, audiences met the delightfully funny, smart and stylish Elle Woods. From her perfectly shiny hair to her high heels, the woman knew how to accessorize, and she knows how to at least try to go after what she wants. The pop culture icon is a character we still haven’t forgotten and now 25 years later, celebrating this movie anniversary, plus Emmett and Elle is a milestone for Legally Blonde that is quite worthy of sparkly pink confetti.

I was surprised to discover the user ratings weren’t as high as I anticipated, but the film is memorable and charming.
THE STORY
If you don’t know what the film is about, Reese Witherspoon makes famous the role of Elle Woods, a perky blonde sorority girl who believes she’s leaving her house for the most perfect date night that will include a proposal from her most perfect boyfriend, Warner. However, he dumps her, suggesting that she doesn’t fit into his perfect plan. Outraged, the California girl stubbornly applies to Harvard, all with a plan to prove to Warner she is good enough. Of course, things don’t pan out according to her master plan, and instead she discovers something (and even someone) far better.
Instead of going through three things I like about this movie because let’s be real here, I have talked about this film a lot, this feature is going to be about Elle, yes, but also the underrated Emmett. Elle meets Emmett while attending Harvard and a little romantic crush happens between them. He is 100% not only an underrated character, but their little love story, minor though it is, is very underrated. Let’s look at three of their cutest romance moments.

THE MEET-CUTE
The meeting between these two is firework-free but still cute, and it sets up the supportive friendship Emmett offers, which then leads to the romance (and more!) they come to have. Speaking of that support…
SUPPORT
Throughout everything, Emmett is always Elle’s biggest cheerleader. He’s good as a person, which makes him someone we all should wish to have in our lives, and supports her. While this is important in any relationship (and 100% has to go both ways), this is also a reason why he’s underrated.
THEM
Though it’s often tagged as a rom-com, I don’t know that this film can really be called this. It is a comedy that happens to have a romance thread (which I think is underrated), but I don’t think that latter genre is the main point. Having said this, I think every little romance-y moment between Elle and Emmett is sweet.
Sadly, they don’t have many such moments since many of their interactions are about Emmett and Elle working a case or Elle’s studies. Still, I just enjoy them together and seeing how Emmett believes in Elle. All of this adds up to the fact that this isn’t a traditional feature in the romance features usually posted, but what’s here is lovely, and one cannot let the 25th anniversary of a film like this pass without showcasing it. Plus, Emmett deserves a little bit of a feature that is about his character, too.
