SOME OF THE MORE UNDERRATED ROMANCE SCENES IN MOVIES

by

Is there ever a scene in a movie that seems incandescently (points if you know which famous film uses this word) romantic? Or is it just one of those scenes that hits you as being extremely romantic but no one else seems to talk about it? Today we are going to. We’re here, ready, willing and excited to discuss some of those underrated romance movie scenes. Because underrated or not, we all love them.

OTP FAVORITES | THE ROMANCE OF EDDIE AND JAMIE FROM BLUE BLOODS (OTP FAVORITES!)

I’ll be perfectly honest. Probably most of these are scenes you know. Nonetheless it’s still hopefully going to be fun and something we maybe spy something new we haven’t seen before. (And hopefully I’ll round up a second list, too!) Even if not, the idea is, just have fun with everything. After all 90+ percent of the time, that’s our goal – to have fun. Let’s jump in.

UNDERRATED ROMANCE MOVIE SCENES

1: THE DANCE from WAR & PEACE

Ok, I’m starting off with a “controversial” one because this scene to me isn’t about the love story between the two characters. Instead it’s about the “romance” of the scene. Everything about this scene is supreme romance. From the setting to the dance, the dance touch around the waist, the costumes and lighting… just everything is all about the 101 of a grand romantic scene. Of course, in a deeper sense it’s not a deep romantic connection for Andrei and Natasha, but the scene sure is pretty to look at and I rarely if ever hear anyone talk about this period drama.

2: THE HAND FLEX from PRIDE & PREJUDICE

THE PAIRING: Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet

More people recently seem to talk about what is now referred to (quite affectionately) as “the flex” from the 2005 feature Pride and Prejudice. The scenario is this: Mr. Darcy, as he bids his unexpected guests goodbye in the driveway of Pemberley, reaches out to assist Elizabeth Bennet in entering her carriage, and doing so means physical touch of their hands. Lizzy has a surprise reaction glancing down at their joined, albeit briefly, and perhaps for the first time having a moment of connection and interest in Mr. Darcy. After turning away from the party, Darcy walks back to his house, and “flexes” his hand in an emotional and physical reaction to the first REAL touch he shares with the love of his life, Elizabeth Bennet.

3: LOVE LESS from EMMA

THE PAIRING: Mr. Knightley and Emma Woodhouse

This one will probably seem popular, but I don’t see people talk about it much. I see the letter from Persuasion mentioned and of course we all love our swoony moments in Pride and Prejudice, but this scene in the 2009 Emma where Mr. Knightley appears on Emma’s back doorstep (because the dude walks everywhere!) is lovely. The pair, quite awkwardly reacquaint themselves after they parted a bit suddenly and after some pauses and starts, Knightley confesses his feelings by, in part saying,

If I loved you less, I might be able to talk about it more.

With much emotion, they realize the depth of their feelings built on years of friendship and they sit together in the sunlight in Emma’s lovely garden.

4: ONE KISS TO RESCUE from BLUE BLOODS

THE PAIRING: Jamie Regan and Eddie

I think their entire romance is underrated, but I really love their season seven kiss (so sassy!) which then in some ways ties into the season eight rescue where Eddie senses Jamie is in grave danger, and by sheer luck of her gut feeling she helps to save his life when a criminal attempts to shoot him.

5: ONE OPINIONATED MEET CUTE from CINDERELLA

THE PAIRING: Cinderella and the Prince

I love the meet-cute in the 2015 adaptation of Cinderella. It’s fun and sweet and cute. Plus, it gives Cinderella a time to be a little bit sassy which I don’t think we see much. Overall, I think it’s just a charming little scene.

6: PERMISSION from RETURN TO ME

THE PAIRING: Bob and Grace

Recently re-watched this one and the scene where Bob, for the first time really, goes out on a date since losing the love of his life is adorable! Not only does he take Grace to a place that means a lot to him, but admitting he’s rusty and he’s not sure how first date etiquette goes, he asks, “can I hold your hand,” and it is really the sweetest.

7: A QUIRKY PROPOSAL from THE CHOICE

THE PAIRING: Travis and Gabby

People either love or hate Nicholas Sparks movies. Or that’s my impression. But I really like Travis and Gabby for an “overall” love story, and I’ve also read the book and seen the film for this story, too. In the film, Travis declares his love to Gabby in a way that’s unusual but also sweet. With ring in hand, he tells her,

“I’ve said all the words, all I need is a lifetime to prove it to you.” – The Choice

It’s just such a charming and lovely scene. At least that’s my memory of it.

8: SIX SMILES from WIN A DATE WITH TAD HAMILTON

THE PAIRING: Rosalee and Pete

win a date with tad hamilton

This movie is all kinds of adorable. It follows best friends who work at a Piggly Wiggly. When Rosalee wins a date with a mega star actor, her best friend Pete begins to realize that he may finally lose his chance to declare his unrequited love. IN one scene, he recites (though it’s not to Rosalee, but it’s still romantic) the six different smiles she has, and it’s a sweet scene. He also knows what each one means in a sign that he perhaps knows her better than anyone.

BONUS! IF YOU KNEW ANYTHING from AN IDEAL HUSBAND

THE PAIRING: Lord Goring and Miss Mabel

I’ve loved this Oscar Wilde story since the first time I saw it. It follows a man who, after coming up through the ranks, is of the new wealth ranks. He’s married to a wonderful woman, has a rising career in politics and has a sister and best friend as support. However when he finds a secret from his past challenge things, a series of funny events take place to try and hide the secret. In between all of this is a do-they-or-don’t-they-like-each-other romance between Lord Goring and Mabel. One of the final scenes where Lord Goring finally asks Mabel is she loves him, she replies,

If you knew anything about anything, which you don’t, you’d know I absolutely adore you.”

The scene is dang cute and I wish more period drama had this playful kind of interaction.

    1. It’s good! Some don’t love it because of casting, but it’s one of my favorites. :) Hope you enjoy if you see it. And let me know what you think.

  1. You have some great moments on your list! But you forgot to include the “bother me baby” part of the proposal in The Choice ; )

    1. YES! Now you’re making me want to re-watch “The Choice.” Which I may in this next week. It is almost Valentine’s Day so I think I’m allowed. ;)
