MOVIE AND TV CHARACTERS WITH ACADEMIC ASPIRATION WHO MAKE SCHOOL COOL

by

For most of the country, no matter where school is, people have started back to school. Because of this, it seems like a good time to look at some movie characters with academic goals. There’s a couple that immediately jump to mind as favorites. However, we must find more than two or three, so let’s get started.

LIST | TOP OF THE CLASS: 16 FUNNY MOVIES (MOSTLY) SET IN HIGH SCHOOL

There are countless characters who head back to school in movies. Some are our favorites. Others maybe not so much. Either way, as it is all about a school theme around here now, we kind of have to take a look at them, right? Let’s jump into today’s Sunday list.

MOVIE CHARACTERS WITH ACADEMIC ASPIRATIONS

MARY ALDER from GIFTED

Mary is a kid, but she’s all kinds of smart. Plus despite her sass, I do think she’s likable.

GILBERT BLYTHE from ANNE OF GREEN GABLES

Gil is a good character in the movies. I just like him and how the actor portrays his character. I think he’s as loyal to his education and pursuit of being a doctor as he is loving towards Anne.

NORA DOMINGUEZ from FROM PRADA TO NADA

A modern Sense and Sensibility character, the “Elinor” character Nora is pursuing higher education, hoping to be a lawyer. But when hardship finds her and her sister, she sacrifices.

JOSIE GELLER from NEVER BEEN KISSED

An adult working as a reporter, Josie heads back to high school to write a story unlike any other she’s written.

RORY GILMORE from GILMORE GIRLS

Honestly, Rory changes once she starts pursuing her collegiate career. Change isn’t bad, at least I don’t think so, but her change isn’t always for the better. Nonetheless, Rory is always the academic.

CORA HAMILTON from RIP TIDE

Underrated dramedy on Netflix, this Australian film is a lot more interesting than I gave it first impressions of. It’s interesting and has some good characters too, plus its lead wants to pursue something beyond the “beauty” her career boxes her in as.

LENA from SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELLING PANTS 2

Do we think the academic is kind of part of Alexis Bendel’s real personality? After playing Rory Gilmore, she plays a similar character here in Lena. Not that I mind as I like both.

EUGENIA “SKEETER” PHELAN from THE HELP

Pretty sure Emma Stone’s Skeeter is a graduate by the time this one starts, but nonetheless, she’s an intelligent character who has more wisdom than most of the people who make fun of her.

CARRIE PHILBY from CARRIE PHILBY

Perhaps THE genius on the list, Carrie is one of those characters who graduated Harvard early and the primary film is about her adjusting to the world outside of pursuing academics.

ANNE SHIRLEY from ANNE OF GREEN GABLES

Anne is such a studious person in terms of she’s smart… but she’s also something of a creative dreamer. Basically, we universally love Anne.

Legally Blonde 2
ELLE WOODS from LEGALLY BLONDE

We love Elle Woods, too, right? She starts off with the wrong intentions to return to school (but also, I’m not against someone inspiring a person to change or chase something if it’s good). She’s dang likable and that’s why I like her.

Who are your favorite scholarly type characters? Have you met any of these? Do you want to? Who would you place on a list like this; name all of your favorite characters with academic aspirations! Let’s meet in the comments.
