‘INVENTING THE CHRISTMAS PRINCE’: A REALLY SWEET FAIRY TALE IMAGINATION

Another day, another Christmas movie review. Since I’ve seen very few (compared to most) this year, there’s catching up to do. inventing the christmas prince

Inventing the Christmas Prince (2022) Hallmark TV Film Review

Working through grief and trying to keep her daughter’s spirits bright, Shelby (Tamera Mowry-Housley) is struggling with the balance of her job and raising her daughter. The issue isn’t whether she likes her work (she does), working as an engineer in science. The issue is her boss, a man who cannot seem to understand that his employees have lives and people who matter to them.

This pushes Shelby to quit her job. The wrinkle in Shelby’s otherwise I-quit-speech is her daughter Grace believing that Shelby’s boss, Evan (Ronnie Rowe) is actually the infamous Christmas Prince. After years of hearing her mother tell stories about a Christmas Prince, Grace has imagines he’s real, a belief that perhaps may heal them all.

Using a royal trope in a new way, Inventing the Christmas Prince is a sweet little story. It uses some of the familiar tropes we know and love, but also has some deeper emotions because of Shelby and Grace’s past. Some of the scripting discussing this feels a little off, but overall, it’s a sympathetic backstory. There is also a support group for Shelby which could mean more seriously topics. Fortunately it isn’t too much because most of the healing has already taken place which helps to keep the script upbeat. The ending does get a tiny bit too cheesy, but it also plays nicely with the make-believe themes.

Returning to Hallmark, Tamera appeared in The Santa Stakeout last year and most recently Girlfriendship. She makes a good leading lady and this movie is better than her 2021 movie. Leading man Ronnie Rowe was also in a sweet Hallmark romance from a couple years ago called Jingle Bell Bride. This just to say, there is a good cast, all of whom make this film sweeter. Not sure how it will stack up to the rest of the movies int this year’s Countdown to Christmas lineup, but Inventing the Christmas Prince is fun.

Content: standard TV-G Hallmark rating with nothing that should bother any potential viewers.
