POP CULTURE NEWS EDITION SIXTY THREE
THE FIRST FEMALE ACTION STAR IS…
So, not unlike recently-ish when she had a big interview spread that inevitably turned political, Jennifer Lawrence is back. This time with the claim that until she made The Hunger Games, there weren’t female action stars. Her quote reads, in part, “I remember when I was doing ‘Hunger Games,’ nobody had ever put a woman in the lead of an action movie because it wouldn’t work…” She says that girls could identify with male action stars but boys didn’t identify with female.
Ok, right off the cuff, this sounds wrong. But we can take a closer look. So the first The Hunger Games film was released in 2012. Granted it would have filmed on either side of a year or two before that release. Regardless, there were still female action stars prior to this. There was Lucy Liu, Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz in 2000 from Charlie’s Angels (say what you will about the film, but it was an action flick); Salt which featured Angelia Jolie in a kind of female Bourne style movie in 2010 (before this she also plays lead action roles like Lara Croft and Mrs. Smith); I have not seen her claim to fame, but many were mentioning Sigourney Weaver; from the early 90s there is Linda Hamilton from Terminator; and also, Kate Beckinsale some said. There’s countless others as well.
Lawarence went one to “clarify” her remarks saying “That’s certainly not what I meant to say at all. I know that I am not the only woman who has ever led an action film. What I meant to emphasize was how good it feels.” She goes on saying that her initial comments, which were shared with Viola Davis in an “Actors on Actors” interview, was caused by nerves because of speaking with Davis. What do you think?
I’m skeptical enough to think her remarks were right the first time.
LEADING MAN WALKS AWAY
The aftermath of Candace Cameron Bure’s interview with the Wall Street Journal has another impact. In the wake of her comments about why she left Hallmark (which in part is creative purposes) and that the GAC network she is currently with will highlight “traditional marriage,” and actor left the network. During the promotion for the GAC film Christmas at the Drive-In, actor Neal Bledsoe was silent. While his co-star Danica McKellar promoted it with great enthusiasm, he didn’t. Later, a statement was released from him that says he will leave the network and no longer be a part of it.
What makes me sad about this situation is that people like Neal Bledsoe and anyone else are making a broad assumption that someone like Candace Cameron Bure’s “traditional marriage” comment (doesn’t matter who is saying this) means she hates people.
That is what I have a problem with.
LAST THINGS
Speaking of TV movies, the battle of “multi-picture” deals continues. This time, the signing goes to Nikki DeLoach and Hallmark. Her film The Gift of Peace debuts this weekend with, what Hallmark says, more projects with her to come in 2023. Also in Hallmark news, they hired a former Disney exec as Vice President of Development, her name is Kelly Garrett.
Rumor has it, Reese Witherspoon will return to one of her most iconic roles in a sequel film called Tracy Flick Can’t Win. This of course would be a sequel to Election. As things sit now, Witherspoon will star and produce with Alexander Payne returning to direct.
Co-stars Ted Danson and John Travolta paid tribute to Kirstie Alley in the aftermath of her passing away this last week. Danson remembered his Cheers leading lady with fondness.
There are rumors that Wonder Woman 3 and the sequel to Man of Steel with Henry Cavill could be axed. What do you think is next for DC’s new “transition” phase?
Taylor Swift is taking her writing skills to a film script. Searchlight Pictures will, according to early reports, adapt a film based on a script by Swift, who is also currently attached to direct. How do we feel about this?
