20+ of the IDEAL MOVIES TO WATCH for AUTUMN

by

Seasonal lists are always fun to make. Not because we find films, as is our topic here, that are always set during the season, but because it’s fun to discover movies that sort of “fit” the season. Since we’re entering the fall season, we’re listing a few of the autumn movies to watch. Some of these may be repeats, but the goal is always to find titles we haven’t featured on lists much or at all.

Most of these aren’t directly set during autumn, but they have that atmospheric look to them. Or the story or plot just feels like fall. Whatever it may be, sometimes it just has that “chill” that puts the film as an autumn. If you think some obvious choices are missing, make sure to revisit our 2020, 2021 or 2022 lists of autumn film watch list titles. You may just spy your favorite there.

AUTUMN MOVIES to WATCH

AUGUST RUSH

It’s been so long since I watched this (and I think only once) that now I’m wondering if it’s more of a summer title. Something about it seems more appropriate for this season, but I’m not sure why. It’s about a talented young musician who sets out to find his birth parents. The film features Freddie Highmore long before he steps into the shoes of The Good Doctor.

AUTUMN STABLES

Pretty sure I watched this Cindy Busby film a long time ago. I don’t remember the details, but I’m 99% sure it’s the usual sweet romance fare.

THE BLIND SIDE

I mean it’s about football (in part) so this one is a must include. It’s also about finding family where you don’t expect to.

CHOCOLAT

No idea what season this is set in, but it’s a darker (speaking of its production atmosphere) period drama and seems like a lovely film to enjoy during this time of year.

DON’T TELL MOM THE BABYSITTER’S DEAD

Only recently watched this one. I think it’s actually set during summertime, but something about it also fits for the autumn season. Perhaps because it’s about five kids trying to survive after the title comes true.

HOME FOR HARVEST

Set during the autumn and fall season, this is a (mostly) cute made for TV type film that follows a world travelled woman enjoying a big city career whose latest assignment sends her back to her hometown.

LORNA DOONE

Another one that seems ideal autumn viewing. I re-watched this in the last few months and was reminded how well I like it. It’s one of those big, historical, dramatic epics that’s just pure entertainment.

THE MAN IN THE IRON MASK

A period drama that again seems like a good watch at this time of year. In fact, I’m probably going to add it to my re-watch list because it’s been quite some time since I saw this Leo DiCaprio film.

THE MASK OF ZORRO

Like the film before this one, it’s another that seems ideal. Only instead of “too much” drama, this one has more of a comedy flair.

MATILDA

Taking place in a school with a harsh headmistress, this one follows a young girl with an imagination but no one in her family who truly loves her. Stream exclusively on Netflix

MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE

I saw this on a whim years ago knowing next to nothing about it. It’s far too melodramatic (in my memory) for me and the worst is, it’s sad. But if you’re a girl who likes those sad flicks, this adaptation might by your cup of tea.

RETURN to ME

This one probably doesn’t take place in autumn, but it has that kind of affect just because it’s a bittersweet story.

Road Less Traveled
ROAD LESS TRAVELLED

Lauren Alania stars in this lower-budget film. It’s the story of a woman returning home and running into old faces. But unlike most of its peers, this one has a little different ending.

THE ROMANTICS

I’ve never seen this one, but do see it pop up when I scroll now and then. It was also on an informational list tagged as autumn movies. Katie Holmes features in the story about old friends who reunite… though my impression is, there’d be almost no character to like?

ROSALINE

A new spin on the Romeo and Juliet story, this one made me laugh in ways a movie hasn’t in a while. It’s one of those easy-to-enjoy movies that’s a good time. Stream on Hulu

SEE HOW THEY RUN

A fun whodunit with an unlikely detective duo.

SCHOOL OF LIFE

A bittersweet story that I didn’t expect to be bittersweet. This is a film about a teacher who charms each of his students. Ryan Reynolds stars in a role from his early career.

THE SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK

This R-rated drama is something I haven’t seen… ever. It has lots of acclaim though I think the fights feature some pretty R-rated language (think dozens of f-words). Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper star in the award-winning drama.

SLIDING DOORS

Recently re-watched this dramedy, and each time I do, I’m surprised by how well I like this. It’s rough to start, but once it evens out, it’s actually an underrated romantic drama.

SON-IN-LAW

Set over the Thanksgiving week, this unusual and quirky comedy follows a college girl who brings home a dude that just doesn’t quite fit with the good girl the family sent to college.

THE SPITFIRE GRILL

It’s been years since I saw this one, but I think it’s a darker dramedy that seems like a fitting autumn story. Though remembering details is something I cannot do.

THE STORIED LIFE OF A.J FIKERY

This one spans multiple seasons, but feels more winter-like or autumn-esque. This plays into the plot too which feels far more moody and dark because of how things pan out for the characters.

AN UNFORGETTABLE YEAR: AUTUMN

What I didn’t know about this one as I was gathering titles is that it’s a foreign film. We all know those aren’t my cup of tea. Same is true of this one. I watched about fifteen minutes before I had to call it. The film seems like it could be cute though in a quirky kind of way. It follows a girl who dreams of being her own boss and winning a prestigious internship is a step towards becoming a good lawyer. The film also has some spontaneous songs (or so it seems!) which doesn’t bode well for a heroine who doesn’t like music.

Have you watched any of these? Which do you like best? Which ones do you want to watch? What movies would you put on an autumn film watch list? Comment all of your thoughts. Let’s meet in the comments.
