18 FUNNY MOVIES ABOUT FAMILIES
According to those funny holiday listings and websites, January 1 is Family Day. Or something of the kind. Since today is close enough (hours away!) to that first day of the New Year, we’re going to use that for our list. While we do talk about movies centering on families often, I’m not sure we’ve ever made a collective list of some of the funny movies about families we seen. If we have, we apologize. Whether we have or not, we’re still going to go that direction because it’s on the calendar, and we’re trying to start this New Year off with following the “rulebook” of the content plans we make.
LIST | EIGHT NEW YEARS EVE TV EPISODES TO STAY IN AND WATCH
18 FUNNY MOVIES ABOUT FAMILIES. Sharing a list of some funny family movies you can watch for January 1's "Family Day"! How many have you seen? #Movies #MovieList #GoodMovies Share on XBelow is a collection of mostly comical movies about families, but there is one or two that are a little more serious or bittersweet. Regardless of the feeling, one thing they do have in common is themes of family and keeping family at the center. We’re also going to try to list films where the family bonds is the primary story. Let’s meet them all.
MOVIES ABOUT FAMILES
ABOUT TIME
A romance, yes, this one has roots in family, and the lengths the hero goes to in order to spend time with his father.
THE BLIND SIDE
Inspired by true events, this film makes out to be all about family and the bonds we form as family. Even when someone unexpected, but unique comes into our lives.
CHARLIE ST. CLOUD
I think I’ve only seen this once, so saying it has strong family ties may be stretching things. But it follows Zac Efron’s character and the journey he goes on to try and heal after a devastating loss.
DON’T TELL MOM THE BABYSITTER’S DEAD
This one has different themes, but I think the overarching theme is about the siblings, and how they learn to work together.
DOWNTON ABBEY
This show is many things, but I think its themes of family are strong, and maybe even get an edge over any other theme. movies about families
THE FAMILY STONE
A Christmas flick, or set at Christmas, this is an ensemble piece about a son who brings his girlfriend home for Christmas, only the result of the visit may reveal some surprising things about everyone. Sarah Jessica Parker, Luke Wilson, Diane Keaton, Claire Danes, and more feature in this dramedy.
THE FAMILY SWITCH
A 2023 Netflix original, Jennifer Garner leads the cast in this straight up comedy about a family who quite literally learns what it’s like to walk in each other’s shoes, which then brings them closer.
IN HER SHOES
Cameron Diaz stars in this 2005 flick about two very different sisters who tend to ruin (sometimes purposefully) each other’s lives, and the woman neither of them know who may bring them back together. movies about families
INSTANT FAMILY
More drama than strict comedy (though you will laugh), Mark Wahlberg stars in this as one half of a married couple who, once happy with their carefree life, realize perhaps they do want kids, which inspires them to look into foster care and adoption, little realizing what they’ll find.
JOE SOMEBODY
Tim Allen stars in this comedy. It’s silly, but very entertaining about a man who, after being humiliated in front of his daughter, tries to get a kind of “revenge” on the man who showed him up.
LITTLE WOMEN
This one is classic, of course. Overall, while I can appreciate what Greta Gerwig did with the 2019 adaptation, I really don’t think it’s “my” version. I grew up with the 1994 adaptation, and while it may be more romantic than Louisa May Alcott would want, it’s still charming.
LOVE, THE COOPERS
Another one kind of like The Family Stone, this ensemble dramady is about a family during the Christmas season.
MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING
This one, I’m debating about adding, right up until “publish.” It’s largely about family, but there’s also a decent romance story. BUT, because the family does complicate the romance, I think I’m going t say it’s family themes that override any other plot.
PEOPLE LIKE US
Chris Pine and Elizabeth Banks co-star in this drama. One I saw years ago, so don’t ask me what it’s all about! I just remember it’s about finding family.
RAISING HELEN
Kate Hudson leads the cast in this dramedy about a successful career girl who’s life goes topsy-turvey when she’s suddenly responsible for three kids.
RAMONA AND BEEZUS
A perfect little flick to watch with the family, this is based on the novel, and features some pretty impressive stars including Selena Gomez, (a young) Joey King, Ginnifer Goodwin, and Josh Duhamel.
WE BOUGHT A ZOO
Matt Damon leads the cast in this alongside Scarlett Johanson, playing a windowed father who takes his family on a new adventure of owning a zoo. It’s a really sweet story that I’ve seen a couple of times, and each time, I enjoy it just as well.
YOURS, MINE AND OURS
I have seen both versions of this comedy movie, and do enjoy both. I’ve seen the newer adaptation with Dennis Quaid more times, but all in all, I just like the concept and plot. Which is a good flick about family, and laughter, too.
Have you seen any of these? Which movies about families would you add to our list; and which ones do we need to make time for? Share all of your thoughts in the comments.
