THINGS TO WATCH LIKE ‘A MERRY LITTLE EX-MAS’

When it comes to things that we love, sometimes we want to find other things that bring that same energy. Thing is, how do we find this same kind of story? Well, hopefully below this list will help ease that burden, at least for one title you may want some similar options for. This time the watchalikes we want to find are things to watch if you like A Merry Little Ex-Mas. Let’s look to see what we find.

LIST | WHY ‘FREAKIER FRIDAY’ AND ITS NOSTALGIC JOY MATTERS

THINGS TO WATCH LIKE ‘A MERRY LITTLE EX-MAS.’ Looking at more things to watch if you liked #Netflix’s Alicia Silverstone led romcom! #AliciaSilverstone #AMerryLittleExmas #ChristmasMovies Share on X

The film, while being (from what I see) roasted by critics, is one that should charm viewers. It wisely casts Alicia Silverstone in the lead role and also has Melissa Joan Hart in a supporting bestie role, so that nostalgia is there. The story is, as its title suggests, one about a couple who have divorced (but just do you know, it’s a conscious uncoupling!), but make plans to share a final peaceful Christmas season together. Things get awkward when ex Everett brings in a new girlfriend. Of course, this means that the season starts oddly for everyone, including the couple’s almost grown-up children. Tis the (chaotic) season!

Not all of these will be Christmas, but they will share one of two things which is either chaotic (aka awkward) family dynamics or exes parting. Let’s meet some of the titles that you can watch if you like A Merry Little Ex-Mas.

THINGS to WATCH if you like A MERRY LITTLE EX-MAS

AN UNEXPECTED CHRISTMAS

A Hallmark film, this one is quite a bit of fun and has Tyler Hynes and Bethany Joy Lenz as a couple reuniting (by accident) when family members believe they are still a couple. It’s a fun movie and also, as its title reveals, a delightfully festive one, too.

CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE

This film is a multistory tale, but it begins with the end of a marriage between Steve Carrell’s “boring” reliable good guy, and Julianne Moore. Moore plays his wife who is ready to be done with the by now stale marriage they are in. Each time I think about this film and replay it, I always have the idea that I don’t care for it only for it to then pleasantly surprise me. Additionally, the film has a pre-Barbie Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone.

Synopsis: Cal (Steve Carell) and Emily have the perfect life together living the American dream…until Emily asks for a divorce. Now Cal has to navigate the single scene with a little help from his professional bachelor friend Jacob (Ryan Gosling). – Prime Video

EVERY OTHER HOLIDAY

Before starring in The Chicken Sisters, Shyler Fisk co-led this seasonal film that I think (don’t quote me) first appeared on Lifetime. It’s about divorced (or newly separated) parents and the ups, downs, and challenges that come with separating and not all being together during Christmas. At the time, it was a unique premise, and I really did like it. Also in the cast is David Clayton Rogers from the short-lived Jane By Design.

HIS GIRL FRIDAY

This film, though highly acclaimed, is not a favorite, but it doesn’t shirk its love of chaos! From an escaped accused murderer, a new fiancé to bickering exes, this one is certainly, well, something. Carey Grant leads the cast.

Synopsis: A newspaper editor uses every trick in the book to keep his ace reporter ex-wife from remarrying. – Prime Video

HOME AGAIN

Reese Witherspoon leads this film about a woman, separated from her husband, who is setting up a new life, which does not include her workaholic husband. The focus is her two girls and reestablishing herself in a career. The film spins into some chaos when she ends up letting three filmmaking best friends crash in her guest house and her ex winds up back in her life. The film isn’t always happy, but it ends in a nice place even if its not the traditional happy every after.

MAYBE I DO

This one has awkward written all over it. It’s not the kind of flick I’d watch time and again, but it was interesting. I like that Emma Robert’s leading lady and Luke Bracey’s hero have a deeper relationship that ebbs and flows though beyond this I’m not all in for this one. There is also Diane Keaton, Richard Gere and Susan Sarandon.

MOVE OVER DARLING

From the 1960s, this is a remake of a film with Carey Grant (which I haven’t seen). This version is hilarious. It features James Garner in the lead role of a man who, believing his missing wife (after a plane wreck) of 5+ years is dead, remarries only for him to see his wife again on his wedding day. This one made me laugh so much and features an iconic scene that is reused in a favorite Disney millennial rom-com-remake.

Synopsis: Five years after his wife Ellen (Day) is lost at sea and presumed dead, Nick (Garner) is finally ready to get remarried. But he’s headed for anything but wedded bliss when Ellen turns up alive – and ready to give first love a second chance – with Nick! – Prime Video

OUR LITTLE SECRET

A Netflix title from last year’s Christmas slate, this has Lindsay Lohan playing a woman who, while visiting her boyfriend’s parents’ home, reunites with her ex! Turns out they are dating siblings which means they’re in for a very awkward Christmas vacation.

THE PHILADELPHIA STORY

I love this movie so very much. Katharine Hepburn stars as a woman about to remarry only she still has a connection with her ex (aka Cary Grant) and engages in a new spark with reporter James Stewart.

THE STORY of US

Despite its acclaim, I have never seen this 90s drama with Bruce Willis and Michelle Pfeiffer. It follows a married couple at the end of a marriage, and the ups, downs, good and bad of their long relationship, and what it may mean to stay in a marriage.

Synopsis: After 15 years together, Ben (Bruce Willis) and Katie (Michelle Pfeiffer) face a turning point in their married life: do they end their story or begin a new chapter? – Prime Video

WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING

This is a fun mistaken identity plot that doesn’t play with the ex trope, but it has familial chaos and misunderstanding which makes it fun. It’s also a kind of “iconic” romance from the 90s with Sandra Bullock, Peter Gallagher and Bill Pullman.

Synopsis: In this hit romantic comedy that woke everyone up to adorable Sandra Bullock. As Lucy, a lonely subway worker, she becomes smitten with a handsome stranger. But when she saves his life after he’s been mugged and fallen into a coma, his hilariously offbeat family mistakes her for his fiancée! – Prime Video
