30+ OF THE SASSY RED HEAD HERO AND HEROINES WE LOVE!
When it comes to characters, there are a variety of things that help them stand out. Sometimes it’s a unique quirk, and sometimes it’s a physical characteristic. As our list today defines, it’s all about having red hair! So, yes, we’re looking at our favorite 30+ red head characters. Some are iconic and some are less so, but still remain undeniably memorable.

30+ OF THE SASSY RED HEAD HERO AND HEROINES WE LOVE! Sharing a list of #RedHeadCharacters. #CharacterList #RedHeads Share on XOn the 26th, it’s Red Head Day, which is what inspires the question what red head characters do we love? From cheerful and likeable heroines to more surly and dramatic, but no matter which ones are favorites, well, there are lots of red head characters in culture, most of whom (with perhaps exception to one or two villains), we are fond of, and some of which were big influences on our core childhood memories. Let’s meet them.
FAVORITE RED HEAD CHARACTERS
ANASTASIA from ANASTASIA
A childhood memory character and movie, this is one of my most favorite movies. And yes I still say this, even as someone who the title is no longer intended for. The movie is charming and cute and just good fun. It’s also exciting and has a few touching moments as well. Plus, the music is quite stunning and for some reason, I have always found this missing princess concept an interesting basis for storytelling.

ANASTASIA from CINDERELLA
She may be considered “mean” or evil, but there is some lore that one of Cinderella’s step sisters is actually regretful of her participation in how she treats Cinderella. This holds true in Ever After and again in the animated Disney sequel film where it shows Anastasia meeting a good match. So in a way, we do to appreciate the character.

ANNA from FROZEN
Who doesn’t love the spunky and likeable Anna? She’s very different than her sister, but so cheerful and is precisely the type of character her sister needs to help her find joy and happiness again.
Stream, at publication, with Disney+; or digitally rent / purchase on places like Prime Video
ANNIE from ANNIE
Annie may be an orphan, but the girl overcomes and keeps her chin up. She’s plucky, resourceful and yes, just wants to be loved.
Digitally purchase the 1982, 1999 or 2014 versions of Annie on places like Prime Video
ARIEL from THE LITTLE MERMAID
I mean, is there a more iconic red head than Ariel? Perhaps, but maybe not so for the millennial generation. Ariel is a charming dreamer we love to champion.

AURORA TEAGARDEN from AURORA TEAGARDEN MYSTERIES
I’m not sure what she looks like in the books, but I do know that Aurora has lovely red hair in the film adaptations. First, she was played by Candance Cameron Bure in The Aurora Teagarden Mysteries (which I think had about 18 titles) and then more recently, Hallmark decided to create a prequel movie series with Skyler Samuels.

HORATIO CAINE from CSI: MIAMI
The leader of a CSI team, Horatio Caine feels like one of the kind of iconic characters in crime drama shows. He’s also a character who is, well, quite tortured as is a normal thing for crime drama heroes.
Stream, at publication, with Paramount+ or Hulu; or digitally purchase on places like Prime Video
ALEXIS and MARTHA CASTLE from CASTLE
How much do we love the Castle women? I think they’re both amazing characters and each have a different but equally important role in the life of the titular hero, Richard Castle. The scenes between Martha and Richard have some surprising depth, and then seeing Castle as a dad is always good fun.
Stream, at publication, on Hulu, Prime Video or Roku
ROBIN ELLACOTT from C.B. STRIKE
I only recently met Robin, but love her. Thing is, perhaps she’s more strawberry blonde than red, but while she doesn’t always look it, sometimes in the show, her hair is more of an obvious red shade than light. Irrespective of coloring, I think she’s a fabulous character. She’s gone through the wringer in more than one way, but remains stalwart. That’s not to say she doesn’t falter, because she does (and we sympathize with her), but she is always determined (at least so far as I’ve seen her journey) to overcome (without pampering) and build a good life which I do admire.

WILMA FLINSTONE from THE FLINSTONES
Another iconic character. The Flinstones have been a family that has been around for generations.
Stream, at publication, the 1994 film on Prime Video; or digitally purchase on places like Prime Video
CLARY FRAY from THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS
A character from the book series The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare, Clary is a girl who ends up witnessing a murder which draws her into a world of the Shadowhunters, people who hunt demons, and of course she meets a brooding boy, too!
Digitally purchase the 2013 film on Prime Video or find the show, Shadowhunters on Hulu (you can also digitally purchase on places like Prime Video).
JEAN GREY and MYSTIQUE from X-MEN
Two of the fierce and sometimes dangerous women from the X-Men world are Jean, whom Logan loves and often loses, and then Mystique, who we all know is quite dangerous.
Stream, at publication, with Disney+ or digitally purchase on places like Prime Video
HERCULES from HERCULES
In the Disney animated flick, the strong hero Hercules has red hair. It’s been years since I saw this film, but the cover art and images remind me this is quite true.

30+ OF THE SASSY RED HEAD HERO AND HEROINES WE LOVE! Sharing a list of #RedHeadCharacters. #CharacterList #RedHeads Share on XJESSIE from TOY STORY
Sassy and opinionated, Jessie is one of the toys we love from the much-loved Pixar and Disney animated series Toy Story. She also has bright red braids making her an ideal fit for this list.

KIM from KIM POSSIBLE
I never say the Kim Possible animated series, but do know it’s a show with a following. The Dinsey show ran from 2002 until 2007 and had Christy Carlson Romano voicing Kim and also had Gary Cole (now on NCIS), Jean Smart, and for 20-some episodes Raven-Symone voicing characters. Then in 2019, Disney produced a live action film that also had Romano starring in a different role and Sadie Stanley in the titular role.

MADELINE from MADELINE
An iconic redhead that was first introduced in a series of stories from the 1930s (and beyond). Sixty-six episodes of an animated Madeline were produced in the early nineties with various voices taking on the iconic roles. Then in 1998, a live action film was made featuring France McDormand as Miss Clavel and Hatty Jones as the troublemaking (but fun) Madeline.

HARRIET MANNERS from GEEK GIRL
Inspired by the novel by Holly Smale, I first met Harriet in those books. Then Netflix released (at least for U.S. viewers) the first season which is pretty close to the first novel. I love Harriet as a character. She’s a little different in the novel, which is where I knew her from, but she’s still endearing and fun in the show, and while I’m happy we’re getting a second season, I also would have been thrilled with one given that she ends in a good place during season one.

MERINDA from BRAVE
Like the film title, this Pixar / Disney animated flick is all about a feisty and brave heroine who does things that require bravery. Plus, she’s also an archer which is fun.

FELICITY MERRIMAN from FELICITY
For me, Felicity Merriman is best known from the classic American Girl novel series. However, Shailene Woodley also did play her in a 2005 film. The plot follows a girl living in Colonial Williamsburg and the ups and downs she experiences which includes her mother’s illness, and an adventure when she helps a young man who works for her father. Fun fact, Julia Roberts also served as an EP on this film.

DONNA PAULSON from SUITS
The loyal secretary of Harvey Specter, Donna is also the woman who Harvey truly loves which sets into motion a long standing “longing” romance between the pair. Donna is whip smart, keeping things running without a hitch and is feisty too. In other words, it’s nearly impossible not to like the character.
Stream, at publication, with Netflix or Peacock; or purchase on places like Prime Video
POISON IVY from BATMAN
I’m not a viewer who finds villains interesting. But I feel like this character from the Batman universe is a kind of “iconic” red head so we’re going with it.
AMY POND from DOCTOR WHO
It’s been years since I watched any of 11’s Doctor Who episodes (which may be the only Doctor I’ve met), but I remember loving him and Amy Pond as his companion. She’s hilarious, opinionated and like so many other characters on this list, she has plenty of sass!

Stream, at publication, various years of Doctor Who on places like BritBox or Max; or digitally purchase on places like Prime Video
PEPPER POTTS from IRON MAN
Over the course of three Iron Man movies (plus an Avenger flick or two), we come to appreciate Pepper even more. I already loved her in the first film Iron Man, but she continues to prove her mettle and show us how smart she is, too.
Stream, at publication on Disney+; or digitally purchase on places like Prime Video
LUCY RICARDO from I LOVE LUCY
From the classic I Love Lucy show, Lucy is, as many of us know, another iconic woman with red hair. Even someone like me who hasn’t seen the show (though I’m sure it’s fun), recognizes her as a famous character boasting all of that bright hair!
Stream, at publication, on Paramount+
NATASHA ROMANOV from THE AVENGERS
Another MCU character, Natasha also known as Black Widow is one of those “bad” turned good characters and yet I don’t ever remember believing she was reverting to being a baddie. I always like her and find her connection with Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye nice as is her funny interactions with Chris Evans’ Captain America.
Stream, at publication, The Avengers (2012) on Disney+; or digitally purchase on places like Prime Video
ANNE SHIRLEY from ANNE of GREEN GABLES
Like a few others on this list, I’m not sure there is anymore more iconic as a red head than Anne Shirley. Introduced in the L.M. Montgomery novels, most of us then “met” her in the 80s Anne of Green Gables adaptations from Sullivan Entertainment and played by Megan Follows.

AMERICA SINGER from THE SELECTION, book series

From the book series by Kiera Cass, this one has a red-headed heroine who competes for the heart of a prince. The book series has often been described as The Bachelor meets The Hunger Games. Though I’ve only read The Hunger Games (and not seen The Bachelor), I do think that’s a pretty apt descriptor. This series has also been in talks to be a series or film for quite some time now.
TIM from ABOUT TIME
Perhaps not iconic or that well known as a character, Tim is someone I do like. I think he fits nicely on the list and is someone I remember liking as a character. He does like to revisit the past when he should be staying more present in his future, but in the end he makes a wise choice and when finally, I watched this film, I was impressed by how well I enjoyed it.

MADDIE TOWNSEND from SWEET MAGNOLIAS
From the Netflix feel-good, small-town show, Maddie is the newly divorced mom of three in the group of three best friends this show focuses on. She’s a lovely character who is determined to help people and loves the people in her life fiercely.

ELIZABETH TUDOR
Elizabeth II is, of course, a real person so I’m not sure if adding her fits since these are fictional characters. Regardless, I’m including her because she has been fictionalized (in a sense) in many TV or film productions. From Cate Blanchett in Elizabeth (feature film) to Alicia van Rittberg in Becoming Elizabeth (TV miniseries), there have been many women playing the role.
GINNY and RON WEASLEY from HARRY POTTER
I’ve never read or seen these iconic and fan favorite wizard stories, but I feel like they were at prime popularity when I was young. Still, as someone who isn’t super fond of fantasy or similar books, well, they probably wouldn’t have been stories I loved. Based off images though, we do know that this world has a couple of red-heads!
