THE COURTSHIP

If you look at the lists I put together like this often, you will know I’ve featured this one before, but it’s quite sweet. Featuring underrated titles is always fun because there are some any and all period drama addicts know about. This is not true of this title, which is a foreign language film and it does have a couple instances of nudity (if this bothers you). However, it may also be a title that is distracting because of the dubbing. I was able to overcome this and found a charming little story about a woman who must marry a stranger (a man in need of money) to find proper social standing.

Synopsis: 1920’s. Promising a generous dowry, a father finds a husband for his daughter through a want ad. Can the arranged marriage turn into true love? – via Prime Video

THE CRIMSON FIELD

This one is dark and sad, and I don’t think it totally gets a solid end because it only has one season. But I also remember being really impressed with this WWI drama and the way these women work so hard to help soldiers and the doctors who fought to save their lives.

It also goes all in on the longing romance which I will admit – right or wrong – that I did not hate.

EMMA, 1997

A production that is loved and loathed, this one has Kate Beckinsale playing the opinionated Jane Austen heroine, and in this, I think she’s perhaps the “meanest” Emma Woodhouse on film. Still, I do like this version from A&E and I think the “look” of it is probably most authentic. Even Mark Strong’s acting as Knightley grows on me each time I see this version.

FIRELIGHT

This isn’t one I’ve seen and I doubt I will. It seems like an intense drama that will end in no way other than misery. The main plot follows an impoverished young woman who, in order to save her father, agrees to carry the child of a man she doesn’t know in order for her father’s debt to be wiped away. Later on, she meets with the man again which of course causes new feelings.

THE GAME of their LIVES

Synopsis: Based on a true story, this film tells the tale of the 1950 U.S. soccer team, who, against all odds, beat England 1 – 0 in the city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Although no U.S. team has ever won a World Cup title, this story is about the family traditions and passions which shaped the lives of the players who made up this team of underdogs. – via Prime Video

THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY, 1979

This title from the 1970s is nearly two hours long, but it’s actually a pretty good flick. Especially if you like a bit of adventure to go with your pretty period dramas. The concept is about a small group of thieves who end up pulling off the greatest heist of all time. It also has an impressive cast including Sean Connery and Donald Sutherland.

Synopsis: Sean Connery plans to steal a fortune in gold from a railroad payroll car and joins forces with safecracker Donald Sutherland and his own girlfriend, Lesley Anne Down, in a series of intricately plotted thefts that will test their larcenous skills. – via Prime Video

I CAPTURE the CASTLE

This is one I’ve featured on this list more than once. But it is an entertaining and thoroughly fun dramady. It’s about a quirky family living in a kind of isolated out of the way place. The story primarily follows sisters Cassandra and Rose, and the loves they have while coming of age in the 1930s. The cast is also brilliant and includes Billy Nighy, Rose Bryne and Romola Garai. I think a young Henry Cavill also appears.

I Capture the Castle is also an adaptation of a novel by Dodie Smith and was adapted for the screen by Heidi Thomas, who is well known for many adaptations including 2007’s Ballet Shoes and the 2017 version of Little Women.

THE INHERITANCE

Is this another title I’ve featured a few too many times on this list? Yes. But as long as it stays with Prime Video, I’ll keep sharing it. It’s (yet another) one of those underrated period dramas that would also fall into the lower budget category. That said, it is still a really lovely film and has some sparkling moments. Plus, it’s inspired by a novel Louisa May Alcott penned.

JANE EYRE, 1983

Is this another one I feature every time I put together this annul best Prime Video period drama list? Probably. But I think it’s a version not talked about as much as newer ones, plus objectively speaking, a version of Jane Eyre is always a good fit on a “best” period drama list. Timothy Dalton plays the iconic Mr. Rochester character in this Charlotte Bronte classic. This is also one of the rare adaptations from BBCs 1980s films that I do actually like. It’s moody as it should be, and while kind of “clunky” at times, it’s ultimately a solid production that I’ve seen more than once.

Synopsis: Charlotte Bronte’s enduring romance about a governess who falls for her troubled, yet kind-spirited master, only to discover a heartbreaking reality.– via Prime Video

THE JOURNEY of NATTY GANN

One of those “oldie” Disney movies that I used to watch back in the day, this is also one I once (or still do?) owned on VHS. It takes place during the Great Depression and follows a girl who overcomes the odds in tracking down her father. Of course, along the way, she gets help too. A young John Cusack is one of the recognizable faces you’ll see in this.

Synopsis: America is in the depths of the Great Depression. Families drift apart when faraway jobs beckon. In this masterful, atmospheric adventure, a courageous young girl confronts overwhelming odds when she embarks on a cross-country search for her father. – via Prime Video

THE KENNEDYS

Given the recent FX Love Story show, it seems fitting that this miniseries is currently on Prime. Likely a show and legacy that interests many viewers, this casts Greg Kinnear, Katie Holmes and Barry Pepper as some of the iconic figures the story follows. It was produced in 2011 and has eight episodes.

Synopsis: The triumphs and tragedies of the most popular political family in American history. – via Prime Video

LEGACY, 1998 series

I know nothing about this show, but it has 18 episodes and high ratings. It’s said to follow a family-run farm and takes place in Kentucky after the Civil War. Brett Cullen is the top billed star, but names (featured only in select episodes) like Brigid Brannagh (who is also in The Inheritance) and Timothy Omundson will also be recognizable names.

Synopsis: A family-run horse farm nestled among the rolling blue grass hills of post-Civil War Kentucky provides the picturesque backdrop for LEGACY, a family drama series that chronicles the proud and close-knit Logan family as they struggle to maintain their deep-seated family values. – via Prime Video

LITTLE MEN, series

I don’t think I’ve ever seen this series or the 1998 film (which runs about 90 minutes), but the tagline on its Prime Video page says that it’s a wholesome period drama that audiences delight in. Marketed as a kind of sequel to Little Women, it follows Jo after she loses her husband.

Synopsis: Set in rural Massachusetts, the series chronicles the heroic struggles of Jo Bhaer as she attempts to manage Plumfield, a boarding school for boys, after the tragic death of her husband Fritz. Based upon Louisa May Alcott’s classic sequel to Little Women. – via Prime Video

A LITTLE PRINCESS, 1989

It’s been forever and a day since I watched this, but it was one that I watched often in my “rotation” of childhood movies. The story is the same which his to follow a wealthy girl who ends up becoming a servant in the boarding school she attends when her father dies in war. This was also one of my favorite versions although I did watch the Shirley Temple adaptation (also currently on Prime) many times too.

Synopsis: Sara Crewe enters a London boarding school a wealthy lady when she bids her father farewell as he enters the British Army, but her lifestyle quickly vanishes when her father suddenly dies, and Sara must endure a life of servitude. – via Prime Video

THE LIVING and the DEAD, series

It’s been a long time but I did watch this and based on my memory, I thought it was good. It’s a ghostly or otherworldly type story so if this isn’t your thing, which is usually not my thing, well then, you won’t care for this. If you don’t mind spooky then this is something to enjoy! It’s a one and done series (six episodes) so it’s nice because you know there is an end in sight without wondering if there will be or is more to come. Colin Morgan leads the cast, an actor who once led Merlin too.

Synopsis: Pioneering psychologist Nathan Appleby inherits a remote house, but eerie events soon challenge his sanity and reveal a chilling mystery. – via Prime Video

MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT, series

I don’t know how well this is liked or how much of an impact it has on the costume drama world, but it does have relatively high user ratings. Some of the production quality is dated, and yet it’s still a drama that holds up (I’ve seen it about three or so times). It’s a Charles Dickens tale that follows a wealthy man whose relatives are all greedy and ungrateful, and so he sets into motion events that will help him determine who will be the best (as a human being) to eventually take on his wealth. The drama also has a good cast which includes Julia Sawalha (from Pride and Prejudice), Tom Wilkinson, and Keith Allen among many other impressive names.

NICHOLAS NICKLEBY, 2002

Pretty sure I include this (yes another one!) each time I put one of these together, but it’s a pretty good flick. It’s a Dickens’ story that I’m guessing takes quite a few liberties, and while there is a good deal of darkness, I think it’s one that tries to find humor and lightness after that. Charlie Hunnam stars as the titular character, a man who tries to be a good person by helping an abused servant and finding a way to get his family, who don’t have much money, out from under the cruelness of an uncle, whom they sometimes have to rely on. Christopher Plummer and Anne Hathaway co-star.

THE PURSUIT of LOVE, 2021 series

This is one I did start to watch but never finished. It follows two very different girls (related as cousins) who take very different paths in life. One settles into life that has comforts and includes settling into her role as a wife, while the other causes scandal in pursuit of following her whims and shifting heart. Lily James and Emily Beecham lead the cast.

THE QUICK and the DEAD, 1987

A likely more famous version of this features Gene Hackman, but this one is inspired by a Louis L’Amour novel. The user ratings are pretty high for this western drama about a woman who looks for revenge against the killer of her father. Sam Elliott, who is no stranger genre leads this cast.

Synopsis: Set on the Arizona/Mexico border, circa 1872, an avenging woman comes across a man who years earlier killed her father. – via Prime Video

THE RANGER, THE COOK and a HOLE in the SKY

Never seen this one, but it’s about a newly minted ranger and the mentorship he has with a veteran (or legendary as the description reads). The film has Sam Elliott and Jerry O’Connell among its recognizable cast list.

RETURN to LONESOME DOVE, 1993

Four ninety-minute episodes (at least on the Prime Video platform) make up this “series.” The show is about a ranch and journeys and of course, plenty of horses too! From 1993, this drama has an impressive cast list too which includes future TV stars CCH Pounder (NCIS: New Orleans) and William Peterson (CSI), plus movie stars Reese Witherspoon and Jon Voight.

SHERLOCK: A CASE of EVIL

There are so many adaptations and versions of the Sherlock lore, and this is just one of them. Sherlock: A Case of Evil is one I saw only recently and puts James D’Arcy in the lead role.

Synopsis: This made for cable movie focuses on the young 20-something Sherlock Holmes. As the movie opens, Sherlock is in pursuit of the evil Moriarty and apparently shoots him to death, but his body cannot be found as he falls in a sewer. Ah, but anyone who knows the Holmes mythos knows that Moriarty is not so easily killed. – via Prime Video

THE TURN of the SCREW, 2009

A drama that is adapted from a novel and less about happy endings, this one has Michelle Dockery and Dan Stevens featured in roles. Of course, these two are former Downton Abbey co-stars, which is always fun for those of us who love period drama. This one is a kind of “haunting” story about a woman who starts to go mad.

Synopsis: A hauntingly atmospheric and star-studded adaptation of Henry James’ classic gothic horror story. A young, inexperienced governess is hired to look after two small children abandoned by their uncle, following the death of their parents. Unsettled by glimpses of ghostly figures that only she can see, she quickly believes that something malevolent is stalking the children in her care. – via Prime Video

VANITY FAIR, 1987

This 80s adaptation isn’t one I have seen but based on other versions I have seen of this story, it’s not exactly a happy story. Becky Sharp is the ambitious and, in many regards, ruthless heroine who makes those who love her miserable by her consistent pursuit of climbing the social ladder, no matter who these choices hurt or leave behind. This version is eight episodes (each about an hour).

Synopsis: Poor orphan Becky Sharp slyly maneuvers her way up the ladder of high society. – via Prime Video

YOUNG SHERLOCK

This is a Prime original and is from the mind of Guy Ritchie. The series reimagines the Sherlock Holmes lore in a kind of origin scenario that first has Holmes and his infamous enemy Moriarty as the best of friends. The show has high viewer ratings and based off of the episodes I’ve seen, the show is a fabulous time. It’s eight episodes and features Hero Fiennes Tiffin as Holmes and also features Colin Firth in a hilarious supporting role.
