SOME OF THE BEST HAPPY POPCORN MOVIES TO WATCH

On the silly holiday calendar horizon is a little day called Popcorn Day. In celebration of this, well, we decided and wanted to put a spotlight on movies we frequently refer to as “popcorn flicks.” You know the ones, the movies that are just silly but ultimately good fun! So, let’s see what we can find that fits the best happy popcorn movies that make us smile or laugh.

Like anything, the popcorn movie term is subjective. For me, titles that fit this are movies that we can play and forget life for a while. While some may have emotional backbone, yes, ultimately are just happy and fun and don’t require we have to really think while watching. We all know that nearly anything you’d watch on Hallmark or UPtv fits this, but we’re going to try to steer away from those in this instance since we talk about that type of film quite a lot. Grab some popcorn, and let’s see what we find.

ARGYLLE

When I rounded up my favorites and best movies of 2024, one thing I discovered is that people loathed Argylle. I thought it was good fun and while not Oscar material, it is still precisely the kind of movie I love best. It follows an introverted author who finds the lines of her real and fictional lives begin to blur.

BANK of DAVE

A kind of hidden gem dramady, this is about a man who, after lending his friends and neighbors money more than once, decides he wants to open an official bank. Together with the help of a lawyer, they take on the banking industry and expect to lose!

BARBIE

No introduction is really required for this one (it was weirdly loved and loathed in equal measures). And honestly, I’m tempted to delete this film since it does dig a bit deeper into the emotions of its heroine. However, I think at its heart this is a feel good flick that easily reflects a “popcorn” movie title.

A BLAST from the PAST

This is a silly 90s film with Brendan Fraser about a man who has been raised in a bunker for his whole life. This was also a kind of followup for Alicia Silverstone after Clueless, and is a film that I feel like no one ever talks about.

CHEAPER by the DOZEN

Just recently re-watched the Steve Martin led Cheaper by the Dozen comedies and they’re still ridiculous, but also super fun.

THE FAMILY PLAN

Mark Wahlberg leads the cast in this hilarious comedy that will put you in mind of titles like Killers or Knight and Day. In it he plays a family man who has hid an entire former life from his children and devoted wife. While it ends really well, Apple is also gifting a sequel to this one.

A kind of sci-fi video game film, this one is a little bittersweet in places too, but is ultimately an extremely fun comedy flick.

GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE

This is the best movie I’ve seen about the Ghostbusters characters. It’s the continuation title featuring Paul Rudd and McKenna Grace. I haven’t seen the original movie yet, but even at that, I think this one paid nice homage to the og story.

GHOSTED

This is a fun kind of romantic action flick about a guy who feels he’s been “ghosted” only to learn the girl he likes is hiding a secret life.

GOOD SAM

This is a simple 90-minute film that’s charming. It’s about an ambitious reporter who reluctantly takes on a story that doesn’t provide her with adrenaline, but does restore her faith in the goodness of people.

GUARDIANS of the GALAXY

I think there is one of these I still haven’t seen, but I remember loving the first movie so much. It was silly and fun and Chris Pratt hilarious as the Star-Lord.

HOME TEAM

If you want something that is pretty family friendly this one might be it. It follows a coach who, while dealing with controversy, must leave his job for a period of time. As a result he goes to visit the son he rarely sees and ends up coaching his little league team.

IT TAKES TWO

This is one from my childhood and recently I rewatched it. It’s stilly, yes, but also makes the viewer happy and leaves us with a big smile. It’s a film with young twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen who play two very different girls who discover they are mirror images of each other.

JERRY and MARGE go LARGE

This is one of the most entertaining new films I’ve seen in recent years. It’s about a retired couple who discover a system to beat the odds and win the lottery. It’s also inspired by a real story.

JOE SOMEBODY

Tim Allen stars in this hilarious comedy about an “average Joe” who is humiliated by a co-worker who also happens to be a bully. He decides that to regain the favor of his daughter, he’ll train to box.

JUMANJI

I’ve only seen the 2017 remake of this with Jack Black and Dwayne Johnson, but it’s quite fun as I remember. It’s about kids who are transported into a vintage video game.

KNIGHT and DAY

A film I’ve seen way too many times, this is about a secret agent who ends up picking up a tagalong when he believes her life is in danger because she boarded the same flight as him. Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz starred in this. happy popcorn movies

LIFT

This Netflix action adventure film is lots of fun. Kevin Hart leads the cast in this kind of “heist in the sky” film.

THE LOST CITY

A film everyone loved when it released, this was one I didn’t enjoy quite as well as the popular vote, but it’s still a fun flick about an author (Sandra Bullock) who ends up on a roller-coaster adventure with her cover model (Channing Tatum).

Stream, at publication, on Netflix or Paramount+; or digitally rent/purchase on places like Prime Video

THE LOVE PUNCH

A flick that leans into a kind of heist plot, Emma Thompson and Pierce Bronson play exes in this comedy.

This one is delightful. Sure, it starts a bit rough (because of a death), but it doesn’t linger terribly much in this sadness. It moves into being funny and cute and delightful. All while throwing in a bit of quirk, too. happy popcorn movies

MY SPY

A Prime Video original, this one is lots of fun. It follows a CIA agent who is assigned to protect a woman and her young daughter only to have the daughter best him when she discovers his surveillance. There is also a sequel that isn’t quite as fun but is still cute.

NATIONAL TREASURE

Fun and above all supremely entertaining, this one follows Nicholas Cage’s treasure hunter Benjamin and the ups and downs he has uncovering long buried secrets.

OCEAN’S 11 (TRILOGY)

I’ve also seen the all-female Ocean’s 8 movie and while I did enjoy, I didn’t love the film. It doesn’t stand out in the way these are, and honestly, I love the women in the George Clooney movies way more than I did in the female-led version. Still, I will admit I need to re-watch ‘8’ and maybe I’ll find it’s better than I remember. Regardless I love these movies, the cast and I’ve re-watched them all many times.

OVERBOARD

There are two versions of this. Anna Faris leads the remake in a gender swapped version and Goldie Hawn stars in the 80s version of the film that tells the same story about a wealthy person who a working class person plays a con on. This one makes me laugh so much which means it’s a really fun and happy popcorn movie that’s easy to enjoy.

PATRICK

This is a hidden gem title that’s really cute and follows a woman whose life goes topsy-turvey when she ends up caring for a mischievous pug dog.
