Share on XIf you have seen some of the other really popular summer-y romance stories different streamers have adapted, well, you will know the main concept of Every Year After. Inspired by the novel by Carley Fortune titled Every Summer After, this tells the story of a girl who returns to her summer home Barry’s Bay in the aftermath of a death. This leaves Percy devastated and forced to face her past, including the first love she thought was her soulmate. But she left this place in pain and secrets, which has made Percy unable to face this past. There are other complications, too, including brothers Charlie and Sam, and the question of whether past pain could or should heal.
Keeping this in mind, let’s dive in and see what else you can watch if you’ve already binged all eight episodes.
BEST THINGS to WATCH after EVERY YEAR AFTER
ALONG for the RIDE, film
A very summer-y romance. This one is based on a Sarah Dessen novel which means for many that it has lots of nostalgia attached for so many people. It follows an insomniac who meets a fellow insomniac during the summer before college.

Logline: The summer before college Auden meets the mysterious Eli, a fellow insomniac. While the seaside town of Colby sleeps, the two embark on a nightly quest to help Auden experience the fun, carefree teen life she never knew she wanted. – via Netflix

ANYONE BUT YOU, film
This film tells the story of the best friends of a couple about to marry, but the thing is after a meet-cute and magical date together, the pair end up hating each other. This comedy earned all kinds of headline press because of its lead stars who created real-life romance buzz (reportedly all for the marketing of the film). Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney portray the would be lovers who turn to hating each other in this adult comedy.

Synopsis: In the edgy comedy Anyone But You, Bea (Sydney Sweeney) and Ben (Glen Powell) look like the perfect couple, but after an amazing first date something happens that turns their fiery hot attraction ice cold – until they find themselves unexpectedly thrust together at a destination wedding in Australia. So they do what any two mature adults would do: pretend to be a couple. – via Prime Video

THE KISSING BOOTH, film trio
Based on the novels by Beth Reekles, these films (there are three) shares a great deal in common with Every Year After. There is the girl and two brothers, only in this story, Elle isn’t in love (or in lust?) with both brothers, she is genuinely best friends with one while she tries to pretend she doesn’t love the older “bad boy” brother.

OUTER BANKS
This one doesn’t really fit (or from what I understand it doesn’t), but I include it because of its beach-y setting. The show tackles mysteries though and as a result, there is less “feel-good” sun-kissed moments. Still, there are beaches and it would seem plenty of silyl drama, too.
Logline: OUTER BANKS is a coming of age story that follows the tight-knit group of Pogues (John B, Sarah, Kiara, Pope, JJ, and Cleo) as they navigate a chain of illicit events filled with mystery, adventure, a high-stakes treasure hunt and the escalating conflict with their rivals. – via Netflix

PEOPLE WE MEET on VACATION, film
Emily Henry wrote the novel that this Netflix adaptation is based on. It’s a story of besties who, each summer, reconnect, taking a trip together. Then, suddenly, things change and distance and a crack in their friendship means they haven’t seen each other for many years. The movie is mostly upbeat but some of its tropes do hit viewers wrong.

THE SUMMER I TURNED PRETTY
This is a Prime Video adaptation too from the novels by Jenny Han, and honestly, this one is probably the “best” match. If you didn’t binge the three seasons, but you did like Every Year After, well then you’ll certainly enjoy The Summer I Turned Pretty. This title also follows a girl who loves the summers she spends away from home and the relationship she has with the sons of her mother’s best friend. Isabel aka Belly is the heroine and Conrad and Jeremiah Fisher the boys she never forgets.

Synopsis: Belly Conklin is about to turn 16, and she’s headed to her favorite place in the world, Cousins Beach, to spend the summer with her family and the Fishers. Belly’s grown up a lot over the past year, and she has a feeling that this summer is going to be different than all the summers before. The Summer I Turned Pretty is based on the book by Jenny Han, who is creator and executive producer. – via Prime Video

SULLIVAN’S CROSSING
A Canadian drama, the latest season to air in the US (with the CW) was season four and it heavily relies on a love triangle situation. Seasons one through three follows Maggie, a surgeon who returns home and reconnects not just with family, but someone she can build a life with. Chad Michael Murray stars and for those first three seasons, Luke Danes himself (Gilmore Girls) aka Scott Patterson also starred.
Synopsis: A star neurosurgeon leaves Boston and returns to her childhood home of Sullivan’s Crossing, a rustic and remote campground run by her estranged father. – via Prime Video

SWEET MAGNOLIAS
This one isn’t about escaping to a beach or pretty vacation spot, however, it does fit the summer show. The story is an adaptation that follows three besties who have grown up in their Southern town and now, in season five, the show is also developing the choices and lives of their children, most of whom are about to graduate high school or head off to college. It’s a series that has something for everyone including love, friendship and obstacles.
Logline: Sweet Magnolias centers around three best friends (Maddie, Helen, and Dana Sue) born and raised in Serenity, SC, a small southern town where everybody knows everybody and everybody knows everybody’s business. – via Netflix

WE WERE LIARS
This one has a mystery angle and is probably darker than Year After Year, however, it shares two commonalities with this latest Prime drop. One being it’s adapted from a popular novel and it takes place in the summer oasis of its characters. The story is about a teenage girl who finds her best friends, and her boyfriend keep her at arm’s length. She knows something bad happened last summer, but an injury makes it impossible for her to remember, and no one will tell her what happened.
Synopsis: One year after a mysterious accident left her with amnesia, 17-year-old Cadence returns to Beechwood, an island off Martha’s Vineyard, seeking answers. As three generations of the distinguished Sinclair family gather at their private summer utopia, no one will talk about the accident – neither her childhood friends “The Liars” nor her first love Gat, forcing her to uncover the truth herself. – via Prime Video

YOU, ME and TUSCANY, film
This follows a woman who travels to Tuscany where she finds herself staying at a gorgeous Italian villa. Here, she pretends to be the girlfriend of one man while finding a spark with someone she meets in Italy.

Synopsis: The producer of Girls Trip serves up a delicious romantic comedy about one little lie, one large Italian villa, and two people getting lost in the sauce of love. Impersonating a man’s fiancée while crashing at his home in Italy becomes a big problem for Anna when she falls for the man’s cousin, and the heat between them ignites a fire that will transform her life. – via Prime Video
