SHUT UP! 20 YEARS LATER: CELEBRATE ‘THE PRINCESS DIARIES’

Ah, the memories. Memories of a little movie that probably made every little girl of its 2001 release over eager to head to the theater. And what memories they are. That’s right friends, the Disney film is celebrating a milestone! Today we celebrate Princess Diaries 20 years later because for one thing it’s simply fun and for another, call me silly, but this remains one of my solid favorites.

For some reason, I was tricked into believing last year was it’s 20th year. But nope. It’s 2021! So, let’s take a trip down memory lane. Like anything, this is one of those movies I haven’t watched for a long time so perhaps it’s one you don’t think I should say is a favorite. However, I feel like I know my movie tastes dang well and despite my gripes about movies that have outdated production quality, I still have those that every time bring me back to a nostalgic time and remind me of the “why” of loving the film.

This one in particular my parents gifted us (in its glorious VHS form!) the Christmas of its release and needless to say, they had two over-eager girls dying to watch the film we were promised we could see (coming from a careful entertainment choice family, this was a BIG deal). So, naturally, we did.

In case you don’t happen to know what this film is about, it follows a teen girl named Mia Thermopalis who, quite to her HORROR, learns she’s an ACTUAL princess. Trouble is, Mia is something of a dork at her school which means the popular kids she her as useless rather than the intelligent girl she is. Of course, there’s more from there, but in her “big break” role, Anne Hathaway shines and of course, no one could play a queen better than Julie Andrews.

As we celebrate this gem of a 2001 release, today let’s play the quizzes (as usual!) and have some FUN!
