One of the bigger hits in recent years, possibly across both network TV and streaming, is Reacher. Since season three just released and it’s an easy show to binge watch even with the grittiness, I decided we should look at what other things we can binge to fill the binge void. I’m not sure what we can find that fits a Reacher watchalikes list, but we’re going to see if there are some TV shows to watch if you like Reacher.

To be honest, I don’t know how many stories there are about characters that travel near and far with nothing but a toothbrush. Most characters warm to some kind of partnership whether it’s practical and reliable or romantic and passionate. So this list may be more about those types of characters than story plotlines that are solely about drifters. Still, I do like a challenge (sometimes) so let’s discover if there are any stories that fit our list mission.

TV SHOWS to watch if you like REACHER 

---

BLACKSHORE

This is a new Irish drama about a detective who is haunted by a past involving her family and a girl who went missing. It remains a past that her home town still blames her for. When she returns, after a complaint too many in Dublin, she must face them all while working on a mysterious new case.

C.B. STRIKE

This is a show, until this list, I have not seen. It’s a dark and gritty production, which fits Reacher, but is about a dark military police turned private eye and the temp, Robin, who shows up and brings some unexpected but needed order to his business life (even if he doesn’t know he needs it). Eventually, as all private detective stories head this way, she is destined to be more than the girl who keeps his office space neat. From what I can see, and it may not be fair to judge either way (positively or negative), this show is quite good. Most interesting is Strike doesn’t conform to the don’t-butt-in stereotype but rather values her input.

DARK BLUE

Dylan McDermott leads the cast in this short lived and dark TNT drama. It follows a group of undercovers who get into some darker and challenging cases. The writers do also dig into some more personal issues too.

ENDEAVOUR 

A detective in the 1960s, this show follows Endeavour Morse and the many cases he cleverly solves. It’s a British show, and is very slow moving. It uses operatic music to help tell its story and has a hero who, while working with peers and a mentor, is still a loner. Still, it’s intelligent and well written TV.

HINTERLAND 

Another short-lived international drama, this one has a character who is described as brilliant leaving behind his London past and working instead as a detective in a small community. This should was an easy binge and one I enjoyed several years ago. It’s a darker story from what I remember. Richard Harrington leads the cast.

JACK REACHER film 

Before Alan Ritchson made the role famous (and fit the novel descriptor), Tom Cruise took on the role in feature films Jack Reacher and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. He may not look the part, but Cruise still plays the role well and in his usual confident fashion. Over the course of the two films, you also see Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins, Aldis Hodge (Hardison!!), Jai Courtney, and Cobie Smulders.

JESSE STONE film

Films that debuted on TV, these are based on books and feature Tom Selleck in the titular role. It’s about a veteran cop who moves to a small East Coast town and outside of his nightly drink, he has trouble forming connections.

LONG BRIGHT RIVER

Amanda Seyfried plays a dedicated Philadelphia police officer who has two people in her life she truly loves and would do anything for. Beyond this, she keeps her distance and hides secrets about the why of this. This one is a Peacock drama and I have to say, it did impress me. At least what I saw. It’s a limited eight episode story in what is called a binge release (which means all episodes are available to watch at one release rather than weekly).

MURDER in a SMALL TOWN

This one is perhaps the least fitting title to have on this list. Something about it makes me think of Reacher. I think mostly because it has a slow moving concept and a detective who uses intelligence to solve the cases he works.

TRACKER

This one is very much a show all about a loner. Justin Hartley stars in this CBS drama. He travels from place to place where he takes jobs finding the missing loved ones of his clients, all while fostering no bonds or real relationships.

WHITSTABLE PEARL aka MIKE MCGUIRE

This show is a cozy mystery that’s a British drama and while it’s not a “loner” story, the detective on the show is very much a loner, made so by a tragic death that he has never really healed from. Three seasons in and we have the highest and best hopes for Mike, a man we really want to see find peace.
