From dark conversational mysteries to deeper romance drama, let’s see what titles we found to fit our very (loose) parameters for this curated list.

WINTER MOVIES to WATCH

ALL of YOU

A very adult film, this is an Apple TV title that doesn’t end well, and honestly, it’s one I’m happy goes this route. Given its themes and the unhealthy choices of the characters, ending any other way would be unwise – at least until they both start to make better decisions. Because of its themes, this definitely feels like a winter.

ALL THE OLD KNIVES

I saw this one well after it was released but was impressed. It’s not a happy film, and in fact ends quite sadly, but the performances impress and much to my surprise, I did like the conversational pace and atmosphere of the film.

THE AMATEUR

A mystery thriller story, this one feels wintery because of the darkness and sorrow of the hero. It’s also an interesting revenge story that feels a little bit different than most I see.

Synopsis: In this spy thriller, Charlie Heller (Rami Malek) is a brilliant but deeply introverted CIA decoder working out of Langley. When his wife is killed in a London terrorist attack, and his supervisors refuse to act, Heller embarks on a dangerous trek, crisscrossing the globe to take down those responsible, his intelligence being his ultimate weapon. – Prime Video

BEFORE and AFTER

A bittersweet film, this has stellar performances and asks the question of how far parents would be willing to go in order to protect a child who may or may not need protection. Liam Neeson and Meryl Streep lead the cast. This one is, if memory serves, also set in our feature season making it a great winter movies addition.

Synopsis: The idyllic life of Carolyn and Ben Ryan is shattered in an instant when the girlfriend of their teenage son, Jacob (Edward Furlong), is found brutally murdered. – Prime Video

BRIDGET JONES: MAD ABOUT the BOY

This one has snow, but I cannot remember if it centers on Christmas or New Year or just wintertime. Either way, the film, which seems to be the final cinematic chapter about the titular heroine is surprisingly heartwarming even with its bittersweet turn. Renee Zellweger returns to the role she originated nearly 25 years ago.

CARRY-ON

Set around Christmas time, Taron Edgerton stars as a TSA agent trying to earn a promotion only for a mysterious voice to order him to let specific passenger and baggage through or else his girlfriend (played by Sofia Carson) will become a victim.

THE ELECTRIC STATE

Honestly, I cannot remember what season this is set in, but it seems like a winter-y flick. (I saw this one at the beginning of the year after all.) Still, no matter when it takes place, it’s a fun movie and has a good cast in Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt.

THE GORGE

An Apple film that was released around Valentine’s Day, this one has the darker concept about two people guarding the titular place, only for them to realize that this is no normal assignment and that their lives are in danger.

IT HAD to be YOU

This one follows two people planning their respective weddings in New York City. Most of the film, if I remember corrently, takes place in the colder weather. Michael Vartan stars as a groom listlessly trying to find his way while Natasha Hestridge’s bride is struggling with a feeling she shouldn’t be: lonliness.

THE LIFE LIST

Sofia Carson leads the cast in this film about a woman who tries to honor the memory of her mother by doing the most with her life and plans.  I cannot remember all of the specifics but the tone and setting feels like a nice winter movies list addition.

MY OXFORD YEAR

This one is an autumn in many ways given its academic themes, however, the bittersweet story also makes this a sad title that feels as if it would be a winter too. Sofia Carson stars as a woman who, while living her dream which is to attend Oxford, discovers a connection she never expected.

THIS TIME NEXT YEAR

This one is super fun and isn’t exclusive to winter, but there is some winter-y things; it starts and ends in the season if I remember right. The performances are really good and I had also read the Sophie Cousens novel that inspired this and found both this and it quite memorable.

This one was available to stream on Roku for a long time, but sadly I don’t see it now; here’s hoping adding it on this list will inspire someone to add it to their streaming library.

WAKE UP DEAD MAN: A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY

The latest Rian Johnson mystery movie is pretty dang good. This is something I say with cautious optimism since, up until now, I haven’t loved any of the Knives Out movies in spite of the fact that I really wanted to. The cast is still good and has Glenn Close, Mila Kunis, Jeremey Renner, Josh O’Conner, Josh Brolin, Daniel Craig (of course, he returns as the detective) and many others.

YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES

From the 80s, this film imagines that a school aged Holmes and Watson become friends at their boarding school. I hadn’t ever seen it until recently, and it was a fun time.

Synopsis: In their first semester at boarding school, a plague of bizarre, puzzling murders grip London, so teenage Sherlock Holmes and his newfound friend John Watson decide investigate, hoping to untangle the dark and twisted mystery. – Prime Video

  1. I’ve seen several of these movies, but there are some that I haven’t seen. Definitely some to add to the roster to watch during the cold winter months. Thanks for the suggestions, Rissi!
