POP CULTURE NEWS ONE HUNDRED and THIRTY-FIVE: WHO ARE THE ‘VIPERS’? ✨ Looking back at the stories from the week. #PopCulture #TaylorSwift #TTPD #Tracker #SoHelpMeTodd #GlenPowell Share on XLIST | RANKING TAYLOR SWIFT’S ‘THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT’
The search engine is primed and ready, and we’re going to dig into the trending stories, all hoping to find some fun ones. In reality, we find next to nothing this week. Or at least nothing interesting considering one story was pretty much already “in the works” and another is something that happens anytime this celebrity puts out something new. We’re still going to give in. Let’s get started.
POP CULTURE NEWS ONE HUNDRED and THIRTY-FIVE
THE ‘TORTURED’ STORIES
Everyone knows that last Friday the release of Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department came out. The album, originally speculated to be about Joe Alwyn, is more about (according to rumors and lyrics talking of a brief romance) her relationship with Matty Healy and another theme throughout is pushing back against fans and commentators who relentlessly obsess over Swift and her choices.
Like someone on Instagram said, Swift doesn’t need anyone to defend her (by flooding social media pages of people she doesn’t get along with). And I’d even go further and say, if Swift does “need” that, no fan should need that. I even like one analysis (from a Twitter user) saying the lyrics ‘I love you, it’s ruining my life’ could be about fans just as it could be about a former love. I think this album is more than just some reflection of Joe Alwyn. Some even say this is THE album to end all her eras, and closes every chapter to open whatever’s next whether that’s marriage, slipping away or another album and tour. If you listen to ‘The Manuscript,’ this theory makes sense.
Additionally, the social media outrage (either extreme, the negative and positive), this past week proves some of Swift’s lyrics true. Songs like ‘Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?’ or the line “I don’t cater to all these vipers dressed in empath’s clothing” is fair. It’s all out of control. It’s also unattractive. Even if these lines are aimed towards commentary or gossip sites (and they could be), it still applies to fans, based on some of the things I see. Like the Deuxmoi account said in response to a question about their thoughts on TTPD, it does kind of “ruin” the new album releases. We ranked the songs last Saturday
LAST THINGS
After months, and months of fodder and gossip, current “now” star Glen Powell addresses the rumors about he and Sydney Sweeney. According to a piece with The New York Times, Powell says there are two things you need for a rom-com which are “fun and chemistry,” and he goes on to say he and his co-star “have a ton of fun together, and we have a ton of effortless chemistry. That’s people wanting what’s on the screen off the screen, and sometimes you just have to lean into it a bit – and it worked wonderfully. Sydney is very smart.” The film put up impressive numbers, but based on what I’ve seen (I haven’t finished it), it’s not the kind of rom-com that endeared the genre. And yes, I realize this is a completely different generation, but I still think audiences deserve a better rom-com.
Late last week, CBS cancelled the lighthearted dramedy So Help Me Todd. The show won’t return for a third season despite the current (almost complete) season set to end on a cliffhanger. Joining it among CBS’ cancellation ranks is the rebooted CSI which was titled CSI: Vegas and now, also NCIS: Hawaii.
DISCUSSION | DO WE REALLY HATE IT HERE?
Netflix will be home to the U.S. debut of A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder. The series will debut in 2024. The series is based on the novel by Holly Jackson and will follow a girl who, along with her pals, tries to solve a possible mishandled murder case.
The rumor that Three Wise Men and a Baby would get a sequel is true. This week reveals that Hallmark will produce Three Wiser Men and a Boy with the returning cast of Paul Campbell, Tyler Hynes and Andrew Walker playing brothers. The film is set to be a part of their 15th anniversary celebration this 2024 Christmas year.
In Tracker news from CBS, longtime CW TV star, Jensen Ackles will star as the lead, played by Justin Hartley’s, brother. May 12 is when you’ll meet the outcast of the Shaw family.
